Today I will be showing you how to make wood look like metal with this faux Metal Painting Techniques. In this Step by step I will show you how to make wood look like rusted faux metal. I will also be showing you how to build an I-Beam shelf made from wood.

Step 1: I- Beam Shelf

So having 4 kids has made me a bit frugal. I find myself making them pieces of furniture out of the strangest items. This is a wood shelf that i painted with rusting patina paint and a piece of Plexiglas.. Here is how i built it.

Step 2: Cut the Wood Pieces

I used a table saw to cut some plywood into roughly 2- 4" pieces and 1- 6" wide piece. I then beveled the edge with a 10 degree cut on edge to give the beam look. You can also use a skill saw if you do not have access to a table saw.

Step 3: Sand the Wood

Next i used 120 grit sandpaper to hand sand all of the pieces to get them a bit smoother.

Step 4: Screw It

I then clamped the boards together and screwed in 1" 1/2 long screws to hold it together.

Step 5: Putty Up the Holes

Using Dixie Belle paint company mud, i filled the screw holes and after it dried i lightly sanded again.

Step 6: Paint the First Coat

I then used black Dixie Belle paint for the first coat and let it dry.

Step 7: Time to Patina

The patina paint that i am using (easiest paint ever) needs a base coat so thats why i painted the black coat first.

I then applied the Dixie Belle patina paint (iron) onto the wooden beam

Step 8: Activator (The Rust Maker)

Next using the Patina spray, I misted it onto the piece while the iron patina paint was still wet. (Important) You must spray the patina spray onto the wet paint before it dries to get the results.

Step 9: Let It Sit

Now you just wait for a few hours (up to 24 hours) for the rust to naturally occur, Its really amazing how quickly this happens. The results are mind blowing!

Step 10: Plexiglas Top

Finally I screwed on a piece of Plexiglas and the shelf was complete.

Step 11: Hang It!

Hang the shelf on the wall using some brackets or even picture frame hangers and you are in business. I really hope you enjoy the video tutorial. Please let me know what you think or if you have any questions.
