Pumpkin carving for me has been like most people. You pick a pumpkin, come up with a fun, silly or scary face, carve holes through said pumpkin and display with and soft glowing light for all prospective trick or treaters to gaze upon.

This year I was not content with the norm. I wanted outside the box. To get outside the box I looked within... the pumpkin that is. I had a thought of what could possibly be within a Jack-O-Lantern. What would it look like? Would Jack have lungs and a heart? What about a brain?. I decided I would give one pumpkin life and give old Jack some organs.

Step 1: Prepping Your Subject

When deciding on a subject keep in mind you do not want to short yourselves space for all desired organs. Find a nice big, round, plump pumpkin that will suit your needs.

We must first bisect the pumpkin giving us two wonderful halves to display the inner workings of the Jack-O-Lantern and yes you must use only the finest knifes with tomato print on the blade. I found great pleasure after this step when I soon found out there was no need to reach through a small hole in the top to remove the bland guts that will soon be replaced. I had full uninhibited access to scrape out everything.

We may now carve out what will be the face. Use your childhood imagination to capture the image of what Halloween is. I went with the iconic figure of the Jack-O-Lantern. Nothing to difficult here. Carve away like so many Halloweens past. Just don't cut yourself like my wife.

Step 2: Organs

Go to your local supplier and choose only the finest donors on the squash family. Don't be too stingy. Have plenty to select from while assembling your Jack-O-Lantern.

First and for most it must have a brain. I suggest a squash full of ridges and bumps, something that just says brain. You will also need a set of lungs and of course there would be no life without a heart. Might I also suggest a nice butternut squash for the tongue. Let your mad science imagination take over at this point. let there be no barriers to stop you from creating the perfect Jack-O-Lantern. The easiest way to keep the organs in place would be to use wood skewers. push through as many as you need to keep them from falling out. No need for the brain to slip out, embarrassing.

Remember, the bigger the pumpkin the more room to play.

Step 3: It's Alive!!!

The last step to give life to this Jack-O-Lantern it to secure the two halves together with more skewers making sure to hinge them apart for all to see the anatomy of a Jack-O-Lantern. Don't forget the candle!
