This is a spin off of the kinetic wall art clock submitted to this website. Our version is done by a record player instead of a clock so there is an aural experience as well.

Step 1: Record Player

Find a record player suitable enough to attach things to it without damaging the player itself.

Step 2: Gear System

Create a gear system using any product suitable to spin something at a 90 degree angle. In our case we used the lego kinex. Play with different gear ratios for different speeds.

Step 3: Optical Illusion

Print out these two images attached onto separate papers, one being translucent (found at an office supply store), and one on a solid background.

Step 4: Putting It All Together

Attach the solid paper to the record player so it is not affected by the gear system and attach the translucent paper to the gear system so that it is just slightly off center of the solid paper. The video attached will show you the effect made by the spinning paper. Put on your favorite record, relax, and enjoy the view.
