Introduction: Balsa Wood TARDIS

building a Dr Who TARDIS out of balsa wood.

Step 1: Supplies

this was just the start. I ended up making a few more stops to the hardware / craft stores.

Step 2: Making the Box.

Started off with 3 inch wide strip of balsa wood. Glued the sides to a 3/4" x 3" x 3" block of plywood.

Step 3: Making the Top

As you can see I got ahead of myself with the priming. It worked out in the end.

  • 1/2" x 3/4" x 3/4" square on the top
  • With trial and error I found out a 30 deg. cut works best. (there was a lot of error)
  • 1/2" x 3-3/4" x 3-3/4" Plywood
  • 1/8" x 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" Plywood

All that is glued together.

Step 4: Working on the Windows and Top.

I tried using painters tape as to paint the frame in place. That more work than I wanted to do.

I also tried using thin wire. I couldn't get that to look good.

So, I went back to the balsa wood. it took some time and each part has to be sanded to fit in place. I'm happy with the way it turned out. I used a gel style super glue to hold them all in place.

Step 5: Window Frame

Step 6: Lettering

not the best at free hand. first time using acrylic paint like this.

Step 7: How to Use the Call Box

I got the images from this instructable. I uploaded the original size and also the resized image. I printed out the small one and it worked out just fine. Cut it out and used some mod podge to glue it in place.
