Introduction: Best Ever Grilled Cheese Toastie

In this Instructabe, I will reveal to you the secret of the best cheese toastie you will ever make.

Supplies

You will need:

  • Sliced bread (white sourdough or country style is best)
  • Butter
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Mountain ("Swiss" style) cheese such as Emmental, Jarlsberg etc
  • An air fryer.
  • Relish, pickles or other fillings if you like. (I usually don't. It's all about the cheese!)

(Ignore the fry pan, it just wandered onto the set unannounced)

Step 1: Butter 'em Up

Take 2 slices of country style or sourdough bread and butter them liberally

Note: I'm using multigrain here, but my preference is for white (or wholemeal) because the more even texture gives better crunch and colour. They didn't have any white left when I got to the shop, but Multigrain is still pretty good.

To get the best results, use a bread with a more open cell style such as sourdough. The highly processed, soft white breads are not as good.

Step 2: Assemble It

It's easier if you take the basket out of the air fryer.

Put one slice of bread into the basket BUTTER SIDE DOWN (this is very important!).

Next, add a slice of Cheddar cheese (sharp cheddar works much better than the milder styles such as Colby), then a slice of mountain cheese.

Note: You can use other cheeses if you prefer, although I like the way that the sweetness of the mountain cheese works to balance the sharpness of the Cheddar. You could also add some pickles, relish, Dijon mustard or other fillings such as ham or tomato if you like, but for me it's all about the cheese.

Now, add another slice of Cheddar.

The cheese should not be too thick. If you are cutting it from a block, aim for a thickness of around 2mm.

Next, put the other slice of bread onto the stack BUTTER SIDE UP.

Step 3: Fire It Up

Set the air fryer for 6 minutes at 200 degrees Celcius (about 390 Fahrenheit) and GO!

(Yes, I know. There are smudgy greasy fingerprints all over my air fryer. Comes from making awesome cheese toasties)

Step 4: Flip It, Flip It Good

After the first side is cooked, flip the toastie over and cook it for another 2 minutes at 200 Celcius.

Note: You may have to adjust the cooking time or temperature to get the desired result. After 6 minutes, the bread should be an even golden brown.

Step 5: Enter Cheese Toastie Heaven

No need for detailed instructions here! You should now have a toastie with a crisp outside and lovely gooey melty cheese inside. Enjoy!
