Introduction: Butane Water Rocket!

About: Hi, My name is Luigi "Ludvic" for the friends, I really like the recycle, the technology and the Chemistry, another of my hobby is Videomaking and I love Youtube, You can check my project on LudvicT…

Hi Guys!

With this tutorial I will show you an amazing effect
BE CAREFUL, THIS EXPERIMENT CAN INJURE YOURSELF, MAKE ONLY OUTSIDE

For really appreciate this special trick you need to look the video before to make it :D

Check it Below! or click on this text if doesn't work the embed

Step 1: What Do You Need?

  • First you need the material:
  • Lukewarm water

(you can use every liquid like cola, sprite and other, but the important question is the temperature)

  • Scissor
  • Plastic Bootle (Only Plastic! NOT Glass)
  • Glove ( for prevent the cold, the gas can freeze your hand)
  • Butane

You can choose two type of butane gas, like this (for camping) or in the can like this (for the little stove or other)

Now you need to pull out the gas in the liquid form "how I can get the gas from the can?"

It's really simple!

For the camping can you need a little nail or screwdriver to push on the valve and turn upside down the can
And for the other type of can you can use a scissor or other like forceps

Step 2: Leidenfrost Effect

In the previous step i illustrated how to pull out the gas, now we need to put the gas DIRECTLY in the bottle with lukewarm water.

When you fill the bootle of water Leave a little space for the gas and the air, like 1/3 of the liquid.

After 30 seconds you can see a little surface of liquid butane float on the water, this is the Leidenfrost Effect:

"The Leidenfrost effect is a physical phenomenon in which a liquid, in near contact with a mass significantly hotter than the liquid's boiling point, produces an insulating vapor layer keeping that liquid fromboiling rapidly. Due to this ‘repulsive force,’ the droplet hovers over the surface rather than making physical contact with it. This is most commonly seen when cooking; one sprinkles drops of water in a pan to gauge its temperature: if the pan's temperature is at or above the Leidenfrost point, the water skitters across the pan and takes longer to evaporate than in a pan below the temperature of the Leidenfrost point (but still above boiling temperature). The effect is also responsible for the ability of liquid nitrogen to skitter across floors." Wikipedia

Step 3: The Reaction!

Now you have the bottle of plastic water with a really cold Butane that's float on the water...an obvious question is

how i can make a rocket with this object?

You need only turn the bottle and leave the water comes out and...BOOM!

The incredible energy of this reaction leave the bottle fly on the sky..Like a Rocket!

This happens because the Butane is in a particular form, he tries to tranform in gas but he need the time for this, but when you turn the bottle, the lukewarm water mixed with the butane and transform him immediatly in the gas, the Gas expand over ten times the volume and try to go out from the bottle, the only hole is the neck of the bottle and this create the energy to push the bottle in the air!
