"CHAR" Cuterie Board Aka Charcuterie Board

I made a charcuterie board from one pine 2x4. With the emphasis on "Char". I wanted to char or shou sugi ban the project.

Supplies

Japanese pull saw, square, pencil, clamps, saw horses, Titebond 3 wood glue,bernzomatic torch, wire brush, wire wheel mounted on a drill and Shellac. One eight foot long two by four. And a contractor Dewalt table saw.

Step 1: Cutting

I started with a standard 8' 2x4 and cut it into 4 equal parts of 24". The rounded edges were trimmed of of both sides of each board.

Step 2: Gluing

After sorting the boards and making sure the end grains were not running together the boards were glued and clamped. After letting the glue dry overnight I scraped any glue residue off.

Step 3: Trimming and Adding a 45 Degree Bevel

I squared the board up on the table saw and cut it to it's final dimension. It is 12" wide and 17" long. They 45 degree bevel cut was snuck up on until it looked pleasing to my eye. The straight part ended being 5/8" of an inch.

Step 4: Charing

The board was burnt completely on all sides. Then it was hand brushed with the wire brush. The drill with the wire wheel was then used to deepen the grooves left from the burning. This process was repeated one more time. I used dry paper towels to clean any ash or soot from the board to prepare for finishing.

Step 5: Finishing

I used a cotton rag and applied three liberal coats of shellac. You can see the progress on the pictures..

Step 6: Conclusion

I enjoyed the process of taking a piece of pine and making something useful and attractive from a board that only costs of only $7.00 US.
