This is merely an instructable showing the craftsmanship of carving stone

Step 1: Tools You Will Need

In order in which you will use them

1. SAW
2.Coarse file (i think thats what its called)
3.Regular file
4.Large drill bit
5. small drillbit
6.Sandpaper

Step 2: Get a Soft Stone

Ok, this could be the hardest part, finding the stone, What kind I'm using is called SOAP STONE, or pipe stone. If you can find any other soft stone like this you can substitute.

Try looking in the phone book for rock shops, or other specialty shops. You can usually buy a big ass chunk for under 5 bucks

Step 3: Saw

Start by sawing off a slab from the main stone. Then saw again till you have a block, saw, saw and, saw some more till you end up with a piece that almost resembles a coffin, make sure that it's thick though

Do this outside as there will be dust everywhere

You don't need any specialty saws, Soap stone is so soft that and old wood saw will do perfect.

Step 4: Basic Shaping

Grab your coarse file and start shaping your piece. The coarser the file, the faster this will go. Then follow with your regular file to make it look something like this. Don't go to thin or it will break, Flatten a spot on top for your bowl to go

Step 5: Drilling the Holes

Using power tools will do this fast, but you are more likely to crack your stone that way, So we're going to do it by hand. Start by flattening the tip of the pipe where the mouth hole will be. Gently hold the drill bit with your fingers and start hand drilling towards the bowl. then do this again where your bowl will be.

Step 6: Sand

Now that your holes are in place, sand down all the scrapes and scratches in the rock. Keep doing this till you have a nice smooth surface, then switch to the black sand paper for a nice finish.

Step 7: Polish

If you have some sort of polish, use that, or what i did here was to get a couple drops of oil and rub all over the stone to bring out all the pretty colors

Step 8: ENJOI

You are the new proud owner of a hand carved stone pipe. The envy of all your friends.
