This cedar photo frame was made from some scrap pieces of wood. It's a very simple design that took very little work, tools and time.

Note: You can change the measurements to fit a specific photo or preferences. It's a square piece so it's easy to change the design.

Step 1: Materials

4 pieces of cedar wood in any size. This one was 18".

Table saw

Miter saw

Wood glue

Clamps

Glass

Step 2: Cut Wood

Cut pieces to 18" each.

Cut a 45 degree angle on each end of the wood.

Tip: After cutting one side of each piece of wood, create a jig using a clamp and a scrap block of wood so that each cut ensures equal length.

The four pieces should fit square with one another.

Step 3: Rabbet the Wood

Using a table saw, create a 1/4" wide and 1/4" deep rabbet. This will allow space for the matt and photograph

Step 4: Glue Up

Glue the miter ends together and clamp the picture frame together. Several clamps may be needed to align the miters.

The glue will take about a half hour. Remove excess glue using a flat head screwdriver, credit card or wet towel.

Step 5: Sand and Finish

Sand any imperfections, fill any gaps with wood fill (if necessary), finish with water based urethane. You can use any other type of finish and yet the cedar was pretty enough to keep it as is.

Hot tip! If you don't have wood fill, mix some sawdust with wood glue and use that to fill the gaps!

Step 6: Cut Glass and Add Photograph

Measure the rabbet size and drop 1/8th of an inch for the measurement of the glass. Cut the glass using glass cutters.

After the glass, photograph and matt and in the frame, use glazing points to secure everything. Secure the glazing points using a putty knife or paint scraper.
