Introduction: Check Your Progress on Long Journeys

Long journeys in a car or a train or even an intercontinental flight can get pretty boring especially during night time or when the scenery isn't anything special. It is nice to be able to check how much distance is left to be covered to reach your destination. Here is how you can monitor your progress using an Android phone:

What you need:

  1. Android phone
  2. Google maps: Comes preloaded on most android phones. Here is the link if you don't have it.
  3. geo Location Marker app : It is free to download on google play store. Follow the link to download it.

Step 1: Brows Your Destination on Google Maps

Connect your device to the internet and search you destination in the search bar of google maps app. Once you have found your destination, tapping it will create a marker and the details of the selected place will be shown.

Step 2: Open With Geo Location Marker

After selecting your destination on the maps app, click on the list menu icon in top right corner. Click on share option from the list menu. This will bring up a list of all apps that can receive the share action from google maps app. Select the geo Location Marker icon labeled as Save Place.

Step 3: Save the Place

geo Location Marker will read the google maps URL to get location coordinates. After the app extracts required information, it will prompt you to enter a name and description of the place and save. You can leave the description blank if do not wish to add a description. Leaving the name blank will automatically save location coordinates as the name. Hit the green save button after you are done typing the name and description.

Step 4: View the Distance and Direction

To view a saved location, turn on location services of your device and click on the saved place. This will show you the distance and direction of that place with respect to your current location. You need to turn on location services of your device to be able to see the distance scale and the compass. Viewing your saved places works without the internet.

Please note: Distance calculated by this app is the straight line distance, which might be slightly less than the actual distance by road.
