Introduction: Choctaw Fry Bread.

About: Like learning food basics.

Fry bread has been around for centuries in the American indian diet.. Some of my ancestors came from central Oklahoma where the Choctaw tribes settled. This is one recipe the family has inherited. It is great for picnics and campouts. You should be able to pick fresh berries and or nuts depending on the season of the year. No reason to have a refridgerator.

Note: Do this at your own risk. I will not re responcible for any or all issues. Get a professional to help if you are not sure!

Step 1: Ingredients and Tools:

2 cups self-rising flour (or 2 cups flour + 2 teaspoons baking powder + 1 teaspoon baking soda)
1 cup warm water
2 Tablespoons honey

Frying oil (such as canola or lard.)

Opptional:
Sugar
Vanilla extract,
Berries
Nuts.

Tools:Dough
CONTAINER FOR GETTING RID OF USED OIL.!!!
cutter.
Measuring cup
llarge cast iron pot
Dpider
Bowl
Heavy wooden spoon
Plate
Paper towels

Fire emergency:
arge box baking soda
Fire extinguisher

Step 2: Dough Preparation.

Dissolve the honey in the warm water.
Using 2 -3  tablespoons of honey, the resulting chunks of fried bread will have a taste of honey.
Add more honey if you want.

Combine the ingredients in a bowl and mix. Add flour or water if you need to.
Add sugar if you want.
Add field berries and nuts if you want.

Dump the mix on a floured suface.
Tear off biscuit-size chunks.
Use a finger and poke holes in their middles. (they will fry flat that way and only two sides to deal with)
You should end up with 8 to 10 donut-like chunks of fry bread.

Step 3: Frying.

Fill a deep dutch oven with clean or new oil to about one inch high . Used old rendered fat can have imputities and make a mess.

In a dutch oven or deep cast iron frying pan. bring oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit,
(or Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into the oil - it should puff up and cook pretty quickly, but not burn.)

Gently slide the dough chunks into the  hot oil and start frying.

Turn them occasionally so they fry evenly. (turn every thirty sconds)

Using tongs or a slotted steel spoon remove when brown. onto a plate with paper towels to doak p the extra oil.

When all is deep fried, TURN OFF THE HEAT!!

LET THE DUTCH OVEN COOL COMPLETELY BEFORE TRYING TO CLEAN IT UP.

Step 4: Eat.

Time to eat. You can add ruit or saviry items to the top of the bread. You can even eat it as it is.
