Introduction: Ceramic Tile Art Project for Kids

About: I love the DIY lifestyle and find it personally rewarding to try new projects and create things from scratch. Instructables is a wonderful place to find and share new ideas with others.

This is a perfect project for a family get together, children's birthday parties, rainy day kids crafts, or creating that special home made gift for loved ones. If you have run out of ideas to entertain the kids at any gathering, this is a great way to interact with the children and keeps them semi quietly entertained for an extended period of time. For more information see: http://a4wardthinker.hubpages.com/hub/Ceramic-Tile-Art-for-Kids

Step 1: Materials Needed

  • 4 1/2" square tiles (16 cents ea.)
  • Variety of colored felt squares (20 cents ea.)
  • Permanent markers
  • Paper clips or other hanging hook (optional)
  • Hot glue gun and sticks
  • Masking tape (optional)
  • Spray can of water base polyurethane

Step 2: Instructions

Using a 4 1/2" tile and a variety of permanent markers, allow the child to draw a creative picture of anything that inspires them. If they don't know what to draw, have them start by picking out their favorite colored markers. Then give them ideas to help them get started. Some suggestions could be favorite animals, a favorite sport, a scenery, a flower, a car, tracing their hand, favorite words, a tree, a house, or anything that will get them excited about drawing.

Step 3:

After the drawing is complete, allow it to set for a few minutes to make sure the marker is dry. Then spray with a clear finish in a well vented area away from others. Allow the finish to dry for about 20 minutes. If you would like to use the tile as a wall hanging picture, you can glue a large paper clip and felt to the back of the tile. This can be done before the drawing is started or after it is completed. Just make sure it is sealed with a clear finish to seal in the permanent marker.
