Introduction: Crochet Purple Whimsical Frock

About: A Software Engineer. I love learning new things. Hooked up with Instructables. It is the biggest find I ever made. :D Cooking and Crochet are my passion. I love to learn different techniques and cuisines.

Crochet is a hobby that keeps yourself and your mind very relaxed as you slowly finish your project. Here I am going to share a crochet frock that I made for my 2-month-year-old daughter.

Keeping in mind the winter I wanted to make her a frock that would keep her really warm.

Here I have shown how to take the measurements and the pattern would suit 3-6 months old. For bigger kids just tweak the stitches as it's really easy to do that.

So let's get started. There are 3 sections in this Instructables:

  1. Measurements
  2. Crochet frock
  3. Crochet flower

Abbrevation:

For basic crochet stitches, you can look into Beginners Crochet Stitches

ch - Chain

sc - Single Crochet

dc - Double Crochet

slst - slip stitch

hdc - half double crochet

Step 1: Material

You would need the following materials:

  • Any color 4 ply yarn (Blue and Multicolour Purple)
  • 3mm Crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Buttons
  • Measuring tape

Guage: (approx)

7 sts =2 inches 2 rows of dc = 1 inch

Step 2: Measurements

My little one is just over 2 months and I want the dress to be fitting for her current size. So this pattern would be correct for 0-3 month old.

I have taken 2 measurements:

  • Chest Circumference - 16 inches
  • Length till knees - 12 inches

Step 3: Creating the Yoke - Row 1

We will first start from the yoke of the dress to the bottom of the frock.

ch 52. sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. 51 sts

Note: Dont do the chain too tight or too loose in tension.

Step 4: Row 2

Second Row - ch 3. turn. dc in each of the next 2 sts. * 2dc in next st. dc in each of the next 3 sts. repeat from * 11 times. dc in each remaining sts to the end. 63 sts

I just checked it placing it on the neck of my little one. It fits perfectly so I continued with the other rows. If at this step you feel the yoke is small, you may have to increase the chains in the first row.

Note - Each row you will be increasing the number of dc in each stitch so that your work spreads out. You will understand it more in the coming steps.

Step 5: Row 3

Third Row - ch 3. turn. dc in each of the next 3 sts. * 2dc in the next st. dc in each of the next 4 sts repeat from * 11 times. dc in each remaining st. dc on top of ch 3. 75 sts

Step 6: 4th Row

4th Row - ch 3.turn. dc in each of the next 3 sts. * 2 dc in the next st.dc in each of the next 4 sts. repeat from * 13 times. dc in each of the remaining sts, dc on top of ch 3. 89 sts.

With this, you will be done with the yoke. I chose to do the yoke in denim blue and the rest of the frock in multicolor yarn.

Step 7: Complete Yoke

Now the yoke has been completed. If you want you can continue with the same color yarn, else you can change over with the next color yarn.

Also tried the yoke on my daughter and it looked perfect. I was satisfied with the length.

If you want this to be a little bigger you can repeat the same increase as new rows till desired and then move to the bottom part of the frock.

You may have to adjust a few stitches in the flare of the frock part.

Step 8: Shell Part - 5th Row

Next, we are going to do shell stitch for the flare of the dress.

Shell Stitch:

ch 3. turn. dc in the same st. * skip next st. shell (2dc ch 2 2dc) in next st. repeat from * to end 2dc on top of ch 3 43 shells

I have made a quick video demonstrating the shell stitch. You can also refer to that to understand how it is done. Once you master this the entire dress is made with the same stitch.

Step 9: 6th Row

6th Row - ch 3 . turn. dc in the same st. shell in the next 6 shells. ch 3. skip the next 10 shells. shell in the next 11 shells. ch 3. skip the next 10 shells. shell in next 6 shells 2dc on top of ch 3

Here we are going under the underarms thus creating the gap for the hands.

Step 10: 7th Row

Next, we need to continue along the shells created. We will be doing dc in the chains created in the previous row.

7th Row - ch 3. turn. dc in same st. shell in the next 6 shells. dc in each of next 3 ch. shell in the next 11 shells. dc in each of 3 ch, shell in next 6 shells. 2dc on top of ch 3

You can now see how the dress is shaping up.

Step 11: 8th Row

Now we will be creating shells in the underarm dc stitches also.

8th Row - ch 3. turn. dc in same st. shell in next 6 shells. skip first dc of underarm and shell in next dc. shell in next 11 shells. skip first dc of underarm and shell in next dc.shell in next 6 shells. 2dc on top of ch 3. 25 shells

Step 12: 9th Row to Be Repeated Throughout

The next row that we are going to do is to be repeated throughout till you reach the desired length of the dress.

9th Row - ch 3. turn. dc in same st. shell in each shell to end. 2dc on top of ch 3.

10th Row to 19th Row - Repeat 9th Row

You can also increase the number of rows with a shell stitch pattern.

Step 13: Finishing the Frock

From the photos added you can see how the dress length is increasing, As the yarn keeps changing colors as it goes, crocheting with this type of yarn gives a beautiful shaded look.

I kept checking my little baby's length and stopped the rows when I reached the desired length.

I stopped at 12 inches. Now finish the dress. Cut off any excess yarn. The ends of the yarn should be finished securely by taking it through stitches.

Step 14: Crochet Ruffle Flower

The crochet flower we are going to do is 2 layered one. After finishing first layer we will create chain loops behind and complete the second ruffle layer.

Being with a slip knot

R1 – ch2, sc 8 on the second chain from hook, slst on the ch at the beginning of the round.

R2 – *ch2, hdc on next st, ch2, slst onto the same st, repeat * 8 times.

R3 – Do the sc and ch2 directly at the back of the work.

R4 – ch, sc on chain loop, ch2, dc3, ch2, sc on the same loop, repeat the same on the next loop until you have done all the 8 loops.

Thus you will have 8 ruffle petal flowers. Each step is demonstrated with photos.

Step 15: Add the Flower and Button

Sew the crochet flower onto the dress. Add a fancy button at the center of the flower.

Also, add buttons at the back of the dress. The button can be inserted into the crochet stitches of the other side.

This is the first dress I am doing for my daughter. Though crochet takes some time to complete, the end result is very satisfying.

Hope this project is easy to follow.
