Introduction: Crocheted Chain Chomp Hat

Hello all! I've seen several versions of a knitted type of this hat floating around the internet, but no love for the crochet-ers in the world. I decided to crochet a version for you all. This is my first time crocheting without a pattern, so I'm sorry if the pattern is difficult to follow at times. I will try to answer any questions if you have them. Enjoy!

Step 1: Materials

1) Black, white, and gray yarn
2) A sewing needle
3) Black and white thread
4) A size 6 or H crochet hook

EDIT: Actually, I would recommend using something closer to a J hook. It turned out better for me on my second hat when I used that size.

Step 2: The Hat

This is the main body of the Chain Chomp. It takes a fair amount of time, so stick with it. Also, if you want to use a larger hook for this step, it would cut down on time.

EDIT: Actually, I would recommend using something closer to a J hook. It turned out better for me on my second hat when I used that size.

sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
st = stich(es)

Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 4sc
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each sc (8 st)
Rnd 3: 2 hdc in each sc (16 st)
Rnd4: (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (24 st)
Rnd 5: (hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next) repeat around (32 st)
Rnd 6: (hdc in next 3 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (40 st)
Rnd 7: (hdc in next 4, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (48 st)
Rnd 8: (hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (56 st)
Rnd 9: (hdc in next 6 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (64 st)
Rnd 10: (hdc in next 31 st, 2 hdc in next st) repeat around (66 st)
Rnd 11-30: hdc in every st (66 st)

Step 3: The Eyes

Okay, so now it's time for the eyes. You can make the whites a little bigger if you please, just add an extra round of two sc in each sc. Make two of each

Whites:
Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 8 sc
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (16 st)
Rnd 3: 2 sc in each sc (32 st)

Blacks:
Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 8 sc
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc (16 st)

Use the sewing needle and black thread to sew the black middle to the white outside. Then use the white sewing thread to sew the eye to the main hat. Space them for enough apart that they look about right, or like the second picture if you need help.

Step 4: The Teeth

The teeth seem like a hard part, but they are pretty easy. You can choose to do larger or more teeth, just follow the same pattern.

Choose a stich a little outside of one of the eyes on the edge of the hat. Tie a half-knot.

Row 1: In firt stich, slip stich one and sc in same st. Sc in every st for 30 st.
Row 2: Chain 1, turn, sc in every sc 6.
Row 3: Chain 1, turn, Sc, sc 2 sc together, sc, sc 2 sc together. (You should end up with four st).
Row 4: Chain 1, turn, sc 2 sc together 2 times.
Row 5: Chain 1, turn, sc 2 sc together. Finish Off.

Now cut the yarn, go to the next available sc on the rim of the hat where you have crocheted white sc. Tie a half-knot and repeat step 1-5, but without the sc in every st for 30. You should end up with 5 teeth. Then, just turn the hat over and repeat the whole process.

Step 5: Finished

Now you are done! Wear your new hat to impress your nerd/gamer friends with your talent. I hope you enjoyed this instructable, and remember, vote for me! Thanks for reading!

Step 6: The Chain

Can't have a chain chomp without a chain, right?

The Base:

Rnd 1: Magic ring with 6 sc (6 st)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in every sc (12 st)
Rnd 3: 2sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc. Repeat around (18st)
Rnd 4: 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc. Repeat around (24 st)
Rnd 5: 1 sc in back stitch of each sc. (24 sc)
Rnd 6: 1sc in every sc (24)
Rnd 7: 2sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc. Repeat around (30 st)
Rnd 8: 1 sc in every sc (30 st)

Connect to the top of the hat. Do this by threading yarn through the hat from the inside and weaving it through the last round of the base. Stuff with yarn on fiberfill.

The Chain (Make 7-10):

Chain 20. Connect last stich to first with a slip stich. 1 sc in every stitch.
