Introduction: Crusader: No Regret Inkjet Print on Wood

With this short build-log I get rid of another frame I had lying around. I think two or three are still left, so there might be more picture frame projects while I am working on something which takes more time to finish.

As many of us, I like to play classic video games - and I really had a lot of fun with the Crusader series. So it was time to do a Crusader themed frame.

Things I needed for this short project:

  • IKEA frame
  • Red Plastidip
  • Plywood (13x13cm)
  • Inkjet printer
  • Picture
  • Transfer paper

Step 1: Disassembly and Spray Painting

At first I took the frame apart and looked for a red paint in my garage. I stumbled upon a can of red Plastidip and thought this could work for the frame - and it did. I just applied several coats of the “red rubber”-like spray to the frame. I think the color worked great and now the frame has a nice handy surface.

Step 2: Printing the Picture

For the picture I just went for the main menu screen of Crusader: No Regret. I made a screenshot, transferred it to Paint.Net and tweaked the colors a little bit to make the red more pop-out.

I wanted to try a technique I first saw at the “Woodworking for Mere Mortals”-channel on Youtube.

You just take a sheet of sticky labels for the inkjet printer, remove the labels and put it into the paper feed of your printer. Don’t forget to mirror the image before printing. Then you can print your picture of choice to the side of the paper where the labels were on. After printing take the paper carefully out of the printer and place it on the piece of wood you want your image on.

For a finish and to make the colors brighter, I sprayed a little bit of spray lacquer onto the piece of wood.

Step 3: Assebly

After everything is dry you can put the frame back together and hang it on the wall.
