Introduction: DIY Bath Bombs

This year for Valentines Day I was looking for a project that I could do with my four year old. I decided that making a bath bomb would be a cool idea because she could have fun while doing it and after we were done. It's a really easy project and is lots of fun in the bath.

What you will need:

Dry Ingredients:

  • Baking Soda 1/2 cup
  • Citric Acid 1/4 cup

  • Cornstarch 1/4 cup

  • Epsom Salt 1/4 cup

Wet Ingredients:

  • Vegetable Oil 3 tsp

  • Essential Oil 1 tsp (I used Lavender)

  • Food Coloring (to desired color)

  • Water 1 tbs

You will also need mixing bowls and a mold of your choice, I used a 3D printed PLA mold* and an ice cube tray.

*The 3D printed mold wasn't 100% effective, I may try again using ABS. Here is a link to the one I used:

Step 1: Mix the Dry and Wet Ingredients Separately

For this step you simply want to combine the dry ingredients, and stir thoroughly until they are mixed together very well.

Then in a separate bowl or cup mix your wet ingredients until they are well combined.

Step 2: Slowly Add the Liquids to the Solids

You will want to slowly add the liquids to the solid mix and stir thoroughly. If you add the liquids too fast it will activate the chemical reaction and make the bomb ineffective and you'll need to start over. I used the teaspoon to slowly add it. it doesn't take long.

After you have it mixed in you should be left with a slightly squishy feeling mixture.

If the color you desire isn't there you can add more food coloring directly into the bowl and continue to mix it in.

Step 3: Place Into Molds, Let It Sit, Demold

The last thing you need is to pack it tightly into the mold of your choice. Then let it sit overnight before taking it out and testing it. If you are in a hurry stick the mold in the freezer for a couple hours. After you take it out of the mold you are ready to go.
