On Memorial day weekend, I got an opportunity to visit Mount Shasta with my husband and my 4 year old son. We saw lot of moss growing on the bark of the trees. As we started the trail, we found lots of moss shedded on the ground. The bright green color attracted me and I thought I could make a terrarium of the glass jar. Its lid was broken and was not usable as food storage anymore. So, we started collecting moss and some rocks from the trail for this project.

I made this today and my 4 year old got equally excited in seeing the results that he made a smaller version himself.

Supplies

Glass Jar

Pebbles

Drift wood

Moss

Soil

Spray bottle

Miniature decor - I used a hut

E6000/ Wood glue

Plastic bag

Step 1: Prepare Soil

Mix in 4 parts Potting soil, 2 parts sand and 1 part activated carbon

Step 2: Trim Driftwood to Fit Inside Glass Jar

Measure your jar and play around with approximate design with your drift wood and stones. I cut my driftwood to fit inside jar.

Once you have your design in mind, Put 1 inch of soil at bottom on jar.

Then make a hill of soil, place the pebbles and drift wood around.

Step 3: Place Moss, Pebbles and Decor

Place moss around the drift wood.

Places few stones.

If you have a miniature decor, glue it to a pebble with E6000 and place it in your design. I used a miniature hut.

I also places some branches with moss growing on them.

Step 4: Water Your Terrarium

Spray some water on sides of terrarium to clean it.

Dry with ear buds the wall of the jar.

Add water to the base of the soil to provide a humid climate to your terrarium.

Step 5: Close Your Terrarium (Optional)

Optionally, you can close your terrarium. If you leave it open, make sure to water it regularly.

Take a plastic cover and wrap it around the mouth of the lid with a thread.

You can also cover it with colorful shopping bag and tie it with jute twine. Cut the excess if the cover.

You can also put glass jar lid.

Step 6: Click Pictures and Put It in Sunshine

I am enjoying mine and my 4 yr old boy also made it in under 5 minutes from the remaining stuff. He choose an smaller glass bottle and decided to decorate with a rose made from polymer clay.
