Introduction: DIY Paper Kanzashi

About: Hello. My name is PrinsesLilly and I like sewing and crafting and such. I don't know. This instructable profile is something I made for fun. I thought it'd be better to look at the contests page every once in…

I made this Instructable because I like the look of the Japanese accessories called Kanzashi. The usual design is flowers and made of ribbon, but I didn't happen to have any ribbon on me. Anyone can make this with paper and glue, without a flame to keep it from falling apart.

Step 1: Materials

Here's what you'll need:

  • Hot Glue gun (and glue stick if you're using printer paper)
  • One or two hot glue sticks
  • A ruler
  • Scissors
  • Something to mark with (like a highlighter or a pen)
  • Paper and/or cardstock (so you can use cardstock, colored paper, or regular printer paper.)
  • A clip.

Step 2: Cut the Paper.

So, first you'll need to cut your paper into strips*. I cut mine 2 cm by 11 inches. Cut the strips into smaller rectangles (somewhere around 6 by 2 cm). Next, bend the rectangles in half and cut diagonally as shown in the pictures.

*I recommend layering your paper and/or cardstock strips to make this craft last longer. I overestimated my cardstock and it didn't last as long as it should've.

Step 3: Assembly

Position 3 of the former rectangles together and glue with your glue gun* (which you'll need if you're using cardstock) or glue stick, one layer at a time. Trim off any excess. You can glue on the bottom, too, but I decided I didn't like how it looked as much. Repeat this as many times as you need. Alternate colors if desired. Glue 6 or 7 of the 'petals' together and repeat. Now you should have two wings of paper petals.

Step 4: The Heart

The heart is fairly simple. You just need to make 3 different sized hearts! To do that, take one strip of paper and fold it in half. Open it back up and glue the inside next to the crease. Stick it together. Take the two ends and bring them together below to make a heart shape. Glue and cut excess. For the second heart, you fold it in half and glue. Then you put some hot glue on top of the folded crease and hold it between the crease of the first heart. Bring together at the bottom and glue. Repeat for the third heart.

Step 5: Finish

Glue the wings onto the sides of the heart with hot glue. Glue the kanzashi to a clip in a way it can still open, once again with hot glue. Remove any strings of hot glue. Finished!

Sorry if this explanation is slightly hard to follow. This is my first Instructable and the first time I've tried to teach people online to make things. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

*Notes:

1. Do not wear outside on a rainy or humid day. Or in the shower.

2. Try not to sleep with this on, especially if you made it out of plain paper.

3. Be careful with hot glue. It burns!

4. This project might take a while. It took me about 3 hours, though that was while I was still figuring things out.
