Get the kids involved with decorating the house for Halloween with these easy-to-make Decorative Halloween Lights. Each balloon takes less than five minutes to make and can be decorated to reflect your own interpretation of Halloween.

Step 1: Collect Materials

Coloured Origami Paper

1 x Black Pencil

1 x String of Christmas Lights

Step 2:

Collect one piece of origami paper and flip it so that the coloured side is facing down.

Step 3:

Fold the bottom right corner to meet the top left corner and press along the base of the triangle formed to crease.

Unfold the paper to form a square again.

Step 4:

Fold the bottom left corner to meet the top right corner and press along the base of the triangle formed to crease.

Unfold the paper to form a square again.

Step 5:

Flip the paper over so that the coloured side is facing up.

Step 6:

Fold the square in half by pulling the bottom edge up towards the top and pressing along the fold to crease.

Unfold the square again.

Step 7:

Push gently on the creases that run horizontally along the paper square so that they meet in the centre, as shown above.

Push the triangle that is formed flat and press along its sides to reinforce the creases.

Step 8:

Pull the bottom left corner of the triangle so that its point meets the top point.

Press it flat so that it forms a smaller triangle, as shown above.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 9:

Pull the bottom right corner of the triangle so that its point meets the top point.

Press it flat so that it forms a smaller triangle, as shown above.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 10:

Flip the triangle over and repeat Steps 8-9 to form a diamond shape.

Step 11:

Turn your diamond 90 degrees so that the split in the paper runs horizontally.

Step 12:

Fold the bottom corner of the diamond up towards the centre, as shown above, and press flat.

Ensure that the tip of the corner does not pass the split that runs horizontally across the diamond.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 13:

Fold the top corner of the diamond down towards the centre, as shown above, and press flat.

Ensure that the tip of the corner does not pass the split that runs horizontally across the diamond.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 14:

Flip the diamond over and repeat Steps 13-14 on the other side.

Step 15:

Find the end of the diamond that is split completely into two.

Fold down the top so that it forms a small triangle as shown in the pictures above.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 16:

Fold the triangle down again (over itself) and tuck it inside the pouch formed by the larger triangle, as shown above.

Press down on the triangle to flatten and reinforce the folds.

Step 17:

Fold down the bottom so that it forms a small triangle as shown in the pictures above.

Ensure that you only fold the top layer of paper, not both together.

Step 18:

Fold the triangle down again (over itself) and tuck it inside the pouch formed by the larger triangle, as shown above.

Press down on the triangle to flatten and reinforce the folds.

Step 19:

Flip the diamond over and repeat Steps 15-18 on the other side.

Step 20:

Lift the top layer of the left side and push it over so that it lays flat on the right side.

The triangles that you folded before should now be hidden within the folds of the paper.

Step 21:

Using your black pencil, draw halloween designs onto the paper.

I chose to only draw on the front of my balloons but you can always decorate both sides if you wish.

Step 22:

Pull the layers of the paper apart so that it forms a X, as shown above,

Find the hole in the top point of the paper and blow into it.

This should cause your paper to puff up and form a balloon.

Step 23:

Repeat Steps 2-22 to make as many balloons as you would like, using either the same or different designs.

Step 24:

Collect all of the balloons and the Christmas Lights.

Step 25:

Lay the Christmas Lights out straight and place a balloon under each individual light.

Step 26:

Push the light, very gently, through the hole in the top of the balloon.

The hole should be small enough to hold the balloons on the lights without extra support, however if you find that you need to, you can secure with a small strip of tape.

Step 27:

Repeat Step 26 until all of the balloons have been placed onto a light.

Step 28:

Your Decorative Halloween Lights are ready to hang!

If you do not wish to use lights, or need a child-friendly option, simply attach the balloons to some string or wool using tape to achieve the same effect.
