Take some inspiration from the dollar store and make some cool, inexpensive vases that look fancy high end!

Step 1: Supplies

What you'll need:

Straight-sided vase

Wood dowels

Wood skewers

Double stick tape

Extra tools:

String for measuring

Tape measure

Saw

Scissors

Step 2: Measure the Circumference

Grab a piece of string, any ol' string, and wrap it around your vase and mark it or hold that spot with your fingers.

Stretch out your tape measure and measure the length of string. This will help you figure out how many dowels and skewers you'll need to go around the vase.

Step 3: Lay Out

I opted to go dowel-skewer-dowel-skewer, every other one so I laid them out for the length of the circumference. Much easier than trying to do math!

Step 4: Trim and Tape

Next, trim up your dowels and skewers to the length of the vase height. Or, you could leave them taller than the vase, alternate heights, have them slant -- really the options are as endless as your imagination!

Here for the purposes of example, I trimmed them to the height of the vase.

Next, grab some double stick tape and either cut one strip and cut the one strip in half lengthwise or cut two strips. Here I sprang for some seriously sticky double stick tape mostly because I wanted to see what it was all about (and dang, it's really good stuff) but double stick tape is available at dollar stores.

Now wrap one piece of the tape around near the top edge of the vase and wrap the other around near the bottom.

Step 5: Start Sticking

Now just start sticking on your wood dowels and skewers in the pattern you planned out, right onto the tape. Have a little bit of sandpaper or a sanding block handy to clean up any errant edges.

I left the wood unfinished but you could stain the wood, paint it, paint parts, seal the natural wood up -- again, you're only limited by your imagination here so have fun.

This handy dandy video will take you through all the easy steps!

Step 7: Fill

Here I made some, what did my husband call them, oh uh, Tribbles for the vases and you can learn how I made them by swinging by Flipping the Flip for all the details on those and the vases.

Step 8: Decorate and Enjoy!

So in about 15 minutes for less than ten bucks you've got some truly hip, custom made decor!
