Introduction: Easy LEGO Wall for Makerspace or Classroom

This is my process for making a LEGO wall for my space.

Step 1: Determine Size of LEGO Wall

This first step is important. Make sure you have the proper wall space. Once you have a location figured out you then need to determine how many base plates you will need to order and use to fill the space. For this project I am doing a 4x4 foot wall of LEGO baseplates with a woodframe included in the overall size.

Step 2: Paint the Wood Frame

I decided to paint the frame to make it look nicer. The color scheme flows with the branding of this STEAM space for my location. You don't have to paint, but it really helps with the accent and over look and feel of the wall. Finally, the wood provides a buffer to the wall to prevent scratches and messes.

Step 3: Layout LEGO Baseplates

The next step is to measure and ensure you have the baseplates centered on the wood frame. I measured, marked, and ensureed it was all good to go. When I had it in the right layout I then took a pencil and a light tracing of the outside of the LEGO baseplates so I knew where to lay them all down when I began to glue.

Step 4: Glue Down LEGO Baseplates

Now comes the fun part! I used a wood glue to adhere it all together. For this one, I used Liquid Nails. I would place the glue on the back of the baseplate and then move into place. One baseplate at a time.

Take your time and double check your work as I share in the next step.

Step 5: LEGO Baseplate Alignment

As I placed each baseplate down I made sure the plates were properly aligned. Additionally, be sure to add LEGO pieces to all intersections and edges of the baseplates. You need to make sure you have proper spacing to allow pieces to be built smoothly across baseplates.

I kept the pieces on while the glue dried to ensure no movement. This step is very important.

Step 6: Final Check and Hanging

I double checked all base plates. I added pieces all over and pulled the pieces off quickly to see that all plates were securely glued to the wood frame. I had a few plates that needed a bit more glue. I find it easier to fix this issue before hanging on the wall.

Finally, hang it on the wall.

Step 7: Enjoy!

I used some metal buckets to store my LEGO pieces down below. This allows for easy clean up. It allows for me to easily move the LEGO pieces if I am doing an activity and I don't want the wall to be a distraction.

Overall, the wall is a success and kids love it!
