Introduction: Furikaki Popcorn

About: I've always had a tendency to make things rather than buy. When your design aesthetic never seems to work with your budget you end up developing pretty good maker skills. I hope my little projects can inspire …

There's nothing like a snack from your childhood to bring back the memories. For me furikaki popcorn is as good as it gets. A little nostalgia and a lotta deliciousness.

If you've been to Hawaii then you might be familiar with this snack. There is a product called hurricane popcorn that you can buy there which is basically a kit that makes this for you. It is delicious. However, If your like me and prefer to eat endless amounts with less artificial ingredients then learning to make it at home is a must!

Step 1: Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cups popcorn kernels
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup furikaki seasoning
  • 1 cup assorted Mochi crunch/arare

The furikaki is a seasoning made with nori, sesame seeds, salt, and a little sugar. It is good on pretty much everything. You can find it in oriental stores or aisles. My Walmart sells it so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

The Mochi crunch or arare are rice crackers that can be found in oriental stores or aisles as well. Where I live Im pretty limited in options. In Hawaii they sell them everywhere. My favorite ones are wrapped in nori so I usually get a whole bag of those. They have a ton of different options for the assorted ones like spicy or wasabi peas. If you can't find them in your local stores you can buy them online at enjoysnacks.com.

Step 2: Making Homemade Furikaki Popcorn

First you will put your oil in a large pot on medium heat. Once it melts add three kernels to the oil. Cover and wait until they pop. This ensures that the oil is at the right temperature when you add the rest of the kernels.

Once the three kernels pop you will remove them and add the rest to the pot. Shake the pot to get the kernels to be completely coated in the oil. Put the lid on and let it go. Once they begin to pop you will want to gently shake the pot to make sure the popped kernels don't burn and to move the unpopped kernels into the oil on the bottom.

Once the popping slows down with only 1 every 3-5 seconds then you will want to take it of the heat. Continue to shake slightly until it stops popping. You will want to take the lid off as soon as it stops popping to release the steam. This will prevent it from getting stale. Place your popcorn in your desired bowl. Be careful not to add any unpopped kernels.

Melt the butter and poor it onto the popcorn. Sprinkle the furikaki as well. Stir to coat the popcorn evenly. Add the rice crackers and stir again. Sprinkle a little more furikaki on top and you are good to go!

Step 3: Tips and Tricks

If you're short on time then you can make this in about 4 minutes with microwave popcorn. I recommend getting plain microwave popcorn and then adding your own butter, that way the furikaki sticks to it. This route means less dishes and no hot stoves on those summer days.

The butter lovers out there like my kiddos will want to double the amount of butter poured on top.

My best tip is to keep furikaki in your purse when you go to the movies! Get your buttery movie popcorn and sprinkle the furikaki all over it. Yummm!

Try it out and let me know what you think! :)
