Introduction: Galaxy Sneakers

This is an Instructable for a project I did last summer.

I will explain how to make your own Galaxy Sneakers! (or other type of shoes for that matter)

Step 1: What You'll Need

First, decide what kind of shoes you want to use.

I bought some cheap simple black sneakers for about €7 from a local store.

Here's everything you need:

  • Cheap canvas black shoes
  • Masking tape
  • Red, blue, white paint (or other colours if you want)
  • Sponge
  • Toothbrush or small paint brush
  • Toothpick
  • Cup of water
  • Paper towel

Step 2: Protect the White Parts

Remove the laces from your shoes.

Then tape all the parts you don't want painted. For example: my shoes have a white strip that I don't want painted, so I put tape on that part.

Don't worry about the holes for the shoelaces. You will be able to remove the paint on that afterwards. But if you want to play it safe you can of course tape those as well.

Step 3: Paint the Base Layer

Once everything is taped it's time to start painting!

I used blue and red paint for my galaxy. It's totally up to you which colours you want to use.

Dip your sponge in one of the colours and apply a thin layer of paint on the shoe. Don't put too much paint on the sponge and make sure you completely spread the paint on the shoe. The paint shouldn't form a layer on the shoe, it should "blend in" with the shoe (see picture). Otherwise the paint will crack when you walk.

Mix your blue and/or red paint with some white to add more effect to your galaxy.

Try to blend the blue and red parts so that it becomes one galaxy instead of seperate clouds.

Step 4: Add Some Star Clouds

Next take your white paint and add some star clouds.

You can use the white paint as well to blend the blue and red parts a bit better.

Once you're done with this step remove the tape too make sure nothing leaked. If it did, use a paper towel and some water to remove the paint.

Next make sure to let all the paint dry properly.

Step 5: Add Stars

This is the fun part!

In this step you'll add some stars to your shoes.

Once the paint from the previous steps is completely dry take your toothbrush (or small paint brush) and dip it in the white paint. Flick little specks of white paint onto your shoes.

Once you're done, take your toothpick and dip it in white paint. Gently tap your shoe with it to make some bigger stars. Also draw a star every now and then.

Step 6: Show the World Your New Shoes!

If necessary clean the holes for the shoelaces. Use a paper towel and a bit of water.

Then put the shoe laces back in and enjoy your new Galaxy Sneakers! :D

IMPORTANT These shoes are not waterproof. You can make them waterproof by using acrylic paint and an acrylic sealer. You could also use some kind of waterproof spray. You should test it first on an old piece of black fabric though to make sure it doesn't mess up your paint or colours.
