These triple layer sandwiches were my mother's "go to" recipe to serve family and friends for social gatherings. There are 3 layers to these delicious sandwiches: a ham layer (ham salad); an egg layer (egg salad) and a creamy cheesy layer (whipped cream cheese with chives and onions). Even with all the flavors in this sandwich, the cream cheese layer is the thing that holds the whole sandwich together and gives it a wonderful creamy taste. Each sandwich is more than enough for one person and can easily be shared with someone since each sandwich has 4 slices of bread. These are great to make ahead for picnics and should be refrigerated 2-3 hours or up to a day before serving. At serving time, cut each sandwich into 4 sections and serve with chips.

Supplies

Ingredients:
12 slices white bread

12 slices wheat bread

1/4 - 1/3 cup spreadable margarine or softened butter

2 4.25 ounce cans deviled ham spread

2 tsp sweet pickle relish

6 hardcooked eggs, chopped

1/2 - 2/3 cup mayonnaise

2 tsp yellow mustard·

salt and pepper to taste

1 8 ounce tub whipped cream cheese with chives

Tools:

2 medium size bowls

3 big spoons

1 kitchen knife

3 1-gallon plastic bags

Step 1: How to Make Triple Decker Dagwood Sandwiches

Arrange bread slices on countertop: 1st row across/6 slices white
bread; 2nd row across/6 slices wheat bread; 3rd row across/6 slices white bread and 4th row across/6 slices wheat bread.

Step 2: Preparing Bread to Assemble Sandwiches...

Spread a thin layer of margarine (or butter) on one side of each slice of bread. This layer will keep the bread from getting soggy while being refrigerated,

Step 3: Make the Fillings.....

Make the fillings: In a medium size bowl, combine the deviled ham
spread and relish. Mix well and set aside. In another medium size bowl, combine the chopped eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper. Mix well and set aside.

Please note: if you can't find canned deviled ham, you can use ham salad from your deli instead.

Step 4: Divide Fillings Evenly.....

Divide the ham mixture evenly among the 2nd row of prepared wheat bread.
Divide the egg salad evenly among the 3rd row of prepared white bread. Divide the cream cheese evenly among the 4th row of wheat bread.

Step 5: Spread the Filling....

Spread the fillings to the edges of the bread.

Step 6: Assemble Sandwiches.....

To assemble: working down each row, place the slice of white bread
(1st row), margarine side down, on top of deviled ham coated wheat bread.

Step 7: Keep Stacking and Assembling...

Lift up both slices, and moving down the row, place on top of egg salad coated white bread.

Step 8: Finish Stacking.....

Lift up 3 slices of bread and moving down the same row, place on top of
cream cheese coated wheat bread. Press down lightly to compress sandwich. Repeat with remaining 5 vertical rows of bread

Step 9: Put Assembled Sandwiches in Plastic Bags...

Place sandwiches in plastic bags and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours or overnight.

Step 10: To Serve....

To serve: cut each sandwich into 4 triangles and arrange on serving platter. Or, for a large single serving, cut into quarters and arrange on serving dish. Serves 6-12 large servings or 24 small servings.
