Introduction: Hidden Cabinet Spaces

Almost all kitchen cabinets have unused spaces hidden from view at eye level. These spaces can be used to hide small items such as keys hung from hooks, but are easily accessed by reaching under the cabinet opening.

Supplies

  • Small sheet of metal which magnetic hooks will be attached to
  • Magnetic hook
  • Strong two-way tape
  • Alternative: Hooks with strong two-way tape

Step 1: Step 1: Find Hidden Cabinet Spaces

The vertical space between two cabinets or a wall are typically covered with a cabinet-colored "spacer" board, which covers the gap. Corners and end-walls usually have a spacer board to fill the gap between the cabinet and the wall or another cabinet. Find a spacer board with enough room to reach under with your hand. Shine a light in the space and ensure there are no obstructions or hazards.

Step 2: Step 2: Attach a Piece of Metal Inside the Hidden Cabinet

Metal, such as a piece of roof flashing, can be used to stick magnetic hooks to. Use strong two-way tape or other strong tape to attach the metal flashing to the hidden cabinet area. An alternative, such as hooks with strong adhesive backing, may be used instead of magnetic hooks stuck to a metal sheet (taped to the wall). Note that adhesives generally stick better to wood than to drywall surfaces.

Step 3: Step 3: Hide Your Items on the Hooks

Once a means of hooking items inside the hidden cabinet space have been installed, use magnetic (or other) hooks to secure your items (keys, wallet, etc.). Items should be located high enough in the hidden area to not be visible from the front of the cabinet.
