Introduction: How to Draw Caricatures

About: YOU ARE MY; apple of my eye; mango of my pie; palaman of my tinapay; keso of my monay; teeth of my suklay; fingers of my kamay; blood of my atay; bubbles of my laway; sala of my bahay; foundation of my tulay; …

Have you ever noticed some artists at tourist spots who offer to draw a funny picture of you? They are everywhere! Ranging from carnivals to weddings.

Caricature artists are everywhere and they make people laugh with their simple drawings. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a professional artist and even an experience artist to draw a caricature. Caricature in it’s most simplest definition is to just simply exaggerate certain features and simplify the rest.

Step 1: Choose a Subject You Would Like to Transform

It could basically be anyone. It could be your friend, a family member, a pet or even an item! But we will focus on a person in this tutorial. Also decide whether you’re going to draw their face only or their whole body.

In most cases when drawing a caricature, you would want to exaggerate the head by drawing a gigantic head with a tiny body but if you want to accentuate a persons weight for example then you can draw a person with a humongous body with a tiny head and big lips for example. Often times, you don’t really need to do STEP 1. You can just go straight to the whole features if you’re just doodling around as shown in this video below:

Step 2: Draw Out Their Face Shape, Eyes, Nose and Mouth

When drawing your subject’s face shape make sure it’s not a “normal” face shape. This is probably where not-so-experienced artists have an edge because you don’t have to make it look perfect.

Make sure you make some features of the face thicker by thickening the lines or else it will look to bland for instance, put thicker lines on the outlines of the face, under the nose, under the lips, mouth, chin and eyes while softer lines will be on the more delicate features such as the wrinkles and blemishes if there are any.

The thickness of the lines will make your caricature look more dynamic and look like it’s popping out at the viewer’s face. Aside from the thickness of the lines, there really is no other basis when you’re drawing a caricature. It’s supposed to look weird and funny.

Step 3: Fill in the Blank Spaces in the Face by Adding Detail

Now that you’ve got the face shape and the facial features, all you have to do is just add detail by making the nose look more like a nose and so on. Again, it doesn’t have to look perfect. If it’s weird and funny, it’s caricature!

Step 4: Show Your Friend/family Member Your Finished Product!

Don't be shy to put some colour! You can sell these drawings at a price or you can upload them at a stock photography site for people to download at a certain price.

I would suggest you make caricatures of political figures or popular people because caricatures are a way of expressing certain emotions to the audience and letting the audience know who your subject is makes it more funny!
