Introduction: How to Fix the Cruse Control on a Discovery TDI

In this instructable I am showing you how to Fix the most common problem with all cruse controls.

Step 1: Pop the Bonnet

Locate the Bonnet pull in this example in the passenger's foot space Then go and prop up the bonnet as shown above

Step 2: Locate Your Pipes

Their should be a set of vacuum pipes in the engine bay locate them as highlighted in the image above.

Step 3: Locate Your Problem

Disconnect each pipe one at once by gently pulling the pipe away from the connecters. Move from left to right standing in front of your car.
The first pipe you come to should be quite easy. Disconnect from the vacuum and then from the T connector.

Step 4: Check Your First Pipe

Now the pipe is off Press your thumb to one end and blow down the other. It may be preferable to clean the end you wish to blow down. Now if any air comes out of any part of the pipe except if your thumb wasn't quite on right Then this pipe needs replacing. If Not then put of back on ensuring that both ends are properly connected .

Step 5: Check the Next Pipe

On this example the pipe is cut at the part in which it leaves the engine bay through the bulkhead and a push-fit connector joins the two parts of the pipe. Disconnect it from the T connector. If you have already got the pipe cut with a push connector move onto the next step. Otherwise cut the pipe IF YOU HAVE A PUSH CONNECTOR. if not clamp the pipe close to the bulkhead as you can and move on to the next step

Step 6:

Now if you cut the pipe press your thumb to one end and blow down the other. Again you may wish to wash the end you intend to blow down. Or if you clamped the pipe blow down it and run your hand up and down feeling for air. if any air comes out. Then this pipe needs replacing. If Not then put of back on ensuring that both ends are properly connected or unclamped.

If you have a split and you clamped the pipe you will need to cut the pipe about an inch away from the bulkhead you will also need to get a push fit connector for when you come to replace it.

Step 7: The Last Pipe

The last pipe is the hardest. Follow it round and put your hand down the hole it goes in now the vacuum pipe connects to one of two pieces of metal pipe make a mental note of which one then remove the pipe. Blow down it as you did in the last step covering one end with your thumb.

When you put this pipe back on remember to connect it to the correct piece of metal pipe.

Step 8: What Next

Now you have found which pipe's need replacing get some pipe like the one you have took off from your local hardware shop. Don't forget if you had to cut the pipe to get a connector for the gap you left

Now your all done
