Introduction: How to Make a Fountain Firework

About: "But I being poor have only my dreams, spread out beneath your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams" 1st Cleric Preston, Equilibrium QED

A fountain firework is the standard firework generally for novices, it's great to get started and is also a nifty effect of embers and sparks. This instructable will teach you how to create one from common materials that can be aquired from hardware stores and chemical companies.

You are required to make some flash candy https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-rocket-candy/
You CANNOT use any other substitute! The results are unpredictable

Note the intro image is off google, there is a completed video in the final step

Before we start I would like to advise against people under 15 from making the firework and I will not be liable for any accidents to the people making the firework ect. If it is illegal where you live, just be cautious (generally authorities only ban fireworks because of accidents and fire risks)

So be safe and have fun

Step 1: Gathering Materials

To continue you will require the fountain "composition" (the powder that makes the effects) and an adequate tube to contain it.
You will need the following chemicals;

Potassium Nitrate KNO3, read my other instructables for sources

Sugar C12H22O11, If you can't get this don't try making a fountain

Iron Oxide Fe2O3, bunnings or hardware stores as oxide colouring

Charcoal C, Put some sugar in a metal container with holes at the top, place this over a fire after some time pure Carbon will remain

Sulfur S, Bunning or hardware stores as mite or fungal reppelant for plants

Aluminium Al, use a coffee grinder with aluminum foil, aim for around 500 micron which is a fine cookery sieve

Bentonite clay or kitty litter, buy at Coles woolworths ect

Before step 3 you must make the aluminium 500 mesh,
-Image 1 tear strips into this size (~5x5cm)
-Image 2 schrunch up strips into tiny little balls

Put them in the grinder and grind for as long as you need to

-Image 3 The powder should look like this with little balls
-Image 4 Potassium Nitrate from Sigma Chemicals (AKA KNO3)
-Image 5 Iron Oxide from Bunnings
-Image 6 Charcoal from burnt tree (you can make your own)
-Image 7 Sulfur also from Bunnings

Step 2: Tubes, Casings Ect

You can make your own tubes using this method:
https://www.instructables.com/id/S803GQRFIZPHEJ1/
Which you can calibrate to your own size, the one I will be explaining is 2.5cm ID and 2.8cm OD the exact same size as an E class estes rocket motor.
If you have used rocket motors you can use them and skip this part.
In this case I will be using aluminium tube, which is much more reliable and doesn't burn (at the operating temperature).

Either way make sure that you have a tube with a bentonite plug at one end and it open the other, the link explains how to ram the kitty litter.

-Image 1 cardboard tube on top of Aluminium pipe
-Image 2 kitty litter in coffee grinder
-Image 3 ground kitty litter (refered to as bentonite clay)
-Image 4 Duct tape, vinyl tape and cut aluminium tube
-Image 5 SKIP THIS IF YOU ARE USING CARDBOARD Clean aluminium tube (don't use bleach or acid!)
-Image 6 Place tape over one side (preferably the straighter one)
-Image 7 tube with bentonite clay and dowel in it ready to ram (if using cardboard use rubber mallet)
-Image 8 A nice clean plug

Step 3: Making the Composition

This firework is basic so the composition is fairly simple;
KNO3- 3 parts
Charcoal- 1 part
sulfur- 1 part
Aluminium- 1 part
Flash candy- 2 parts
(Note that all parts are by weight)
To make flash candy; https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-rocket-candy/
Using the coffee grinder, mix the Charcoal, Sulfur and Aluminium together until they are homogeneous.
Now take that out and leave it aside.
Clean the inside of the coffee grinder with water (this is very important), once it is dry mix the KNO3 and flash candy together and once they are powdered, mix (in a bowl carefully) all the parts together

Step 4: Last Step

-Image 1 With your tube fill it almost full with composition and place the same size dowel as the ID into the tube and ram HARD, once it is compressed add some more and compress that, eventualy you can't compress any more thats ok just leave some loose powder in there.

-Image 2 Place a piece of Duct or Vinyl tape over the end.
Get a drill piece that is 1/2 the size of the ID and using a drill or your hands, drill through the BENTONITE plug until your past the plug + 1cm.

-Image 3 Get a squewer and tape it to the tube, insert a Fuse and your DONE
