Introduction: How to Make a Thread Spool Holder/organizer

I saw a thread spool holder on sale at the fabric store the other day for $15. There wasn't much to it and I kind of needed one so I went ahead and made my own.

I made it at TechShop.

Step 1: Things You'll Need

  • 8"x12" board or plywood
  • 1/2" dowel
  • 1/4" dowel
  • wood glue
  • 1/2" drill bit
  • 1/4" drill bit
  • Old wire clothes hanger

Step 2: Prepare the Base

Start by sanding down the edges of your board. Round them over to prevent any cuts and just make it smoother.

On one end, use a drill press to drill a 1/2" hole. This is the hole where we'll put our dowel that holds up the thread.

On the other end, drill 9 (or your preferred number) of holes that will be used to hold the individual spools of thread.

Step 3: Cut and Attach Dowels

I cut the thread holders down to 2 1/4 " and glued them in place.

Step 4: Prepare the String Holder

My wire hanger was 5/32" in diameter so I used a 5/32" drill bit to drill a hole through the top of my 1/2" dowel.

Insert the hanger wire and wrap it around the dowel a couple of times.

On the other end of the wire, make a couple of big loops. This is what the thread will go through on its way to the machine.

Step 5: Final Assembly

With your base and thread holder both ready, just glue the two together.
