Introduction: How to Make Rheoscopic Fluid.

This is my first published instructions so it is a learn as I go process.

Rheoscopic fluid is used to see the flow of liquids. You can make about 2 liters of it for around $4.00. You can purchase it on Amazon and other locations for around $20. You can also make your own from mica powder for much less but I don't know how that would work. Mica powder is used in cosmetics. Mica as a mineral, is used as a non conducting high temperature insulator. For instance, it is used in hair dryers. This is where we are going to be getting our mica to make our own mica power.

Step 1: What You Will Need.

There are only two things which you will need. Pick up an old hair dryers from Good Will, Salvation Army or your sisters closet. It will only cost about $3.00 so maybe you shouldn't use your sister's hair dryer to keep on the good side of her.

Xanthan Gum is available at Wal-Mart for less than a dollar. This is used as a thickener in cooking.

Step 2: Remove the Mica From the Hair Dryer.

The mica is the silvery cardboard like material inside the nozzle. It holds the heater. There is also a cone around the inside of the nozzle. Use what ever tools you have to remove the mica from the hair dryer. If you get aggressive like I do, you will need to protect you limbs and other useful body parts such as the sight organs from projectiles. Probably you should wear gloves and a face shield even if you are not aggressive.

Break the metal off the mica and discard it or save it for another project.

Step 3: Turn Mica to Mica Power.

Put the dry mica into the blender and let it chop away. After a few minutes filter the material through the screen to remove the smaller particles. Keep chopping the larger particles and filtering until you feel you have done about you you can. Run the filtered particles through the screen and back into the blender. Use some water to wash the particles through the screen. Don't use too much water at first. Again use the blender on the power and the water. Add a half teaspoon of Xanthan Gum enough water to make it about half full. Blend some more until you are happy. You can add more water if it is too thick. Enjoy.
