Introduction: How to Play the Ocarina

About: hiya there stalker! Just kidding..My Name is Sharon, I'm a Christian. I love the LOTR , The legend of Zelda, and books.. my favorite instrument is the ocarina, because of the Loz of course.. the ocarina in my …

Hiya! A while ago I posted an ible on choosing your first Ocarina, if you bought one or already own one, this ible will show you all I know about playing it!

Step 1: First Off Is Learning How to Hold an Ocarina... It Sounds Silly But It's Really Important..

Hold the ocarina with your right hand facing out and your left hand facing you. Right index finger goes on the hole closest to the mouth piece. Left index finger goes over the hole near the leftmost edge. Now place all of your fingers down. Thumbs on the bottom holes. Cover the holes with the pads of your fingers, sealing them firmly but gently. The ocarina should feel comfortable and steady.

Step 2: Now Bring the Ocarina to Your Mouth and Blow Into It, Saying "tu". Do This a Couple of Times Until It Sounds Clear.

You should be breathing form your stomach, not chest, practice breathing a couple of times, you shouldn't feel your shoulders rise if you do it correctly. Good posture is important as well.

Step 3: Now Time to Make Noise

Now if you have mastered saying "tu", we can get on to real music time.. It helps a lot if you know sheet music, which I do not, so I learn songs by ear and tabs. But I do know the ocarinas fingerings for notes. It's very hard to explain, so look at the picture for the note fingerings. Start at C, then work your way up, taking quick breaths when needed. (remember to say "tu" to begin each note) as you go up the scale, you'll need to increase breath pressure. It if it sounds flat, blow harder, if its sharp blow softer. Use a tuner to help get it right. Breath control is very important.

Step 4: Playing Techniques.

As you go up the scale you'll notice that the ocarina becomes unstable. You'll need to fix this.. When lifting the thumb holes, don't actually lift them, roll them. Like in the picture.

Step 5: Playing Techniques.

Once you lift the right pinkie, put it on the outer edge of the ocarina for more balance. If you have a longer ocarina, wrap your pinkie and ring finger around the end.

Step 6: Now... We Can Play Somthin.

Are you ready to play some music? I have provided tabs for you to use, you can find tons of them on the Internet. Just search for "12 hole ocarina tabs" and add the name of the song.

Step 7:

The first one is Zelda's lullaby. The second is the song of time, and the third is Saria's song. Take it slow, you'll eventually get it. It takes a while to make the high notes sound clear. Refer the the picture of the note fingerings if you need them. You can play sheet music songs if you learn these. (provided you can read sheet music) Just memorize the fingering.

Step 8: The End

This is the end... No no, don't cry! ? I hope the ible helps you on your ocarina playing dreams! If you see I left something out, please comment and let me know and I'd be happy to add it. Bye!
