Introduction: How to To Mark a Fire Hydrant With a Blue Reflector

Fire hydrants are often obscured by objects, making them difficult for fire fighters to find at night. Blue reflectors make fire hydrants easily visible. While there are other ways to adhere blue reflectors to the pavement, this article explains how to install a reflector using a butyl pad

Step 1:

Sweep the area where the blue reflector will be installed until it is completely clean and dry. Do not install road reflectors if rainfall has occurred in the past 24 hours, or if the pavement is visibly wet.

Step 2:

Peel off the liner from one side of the butyl pad. Carefully position the butyl pad on the pavement. Keeping the top side protected by the paper backing, step on the pad to stick it down firmly into the pavement. Peel off the top liner.

Step 3:

Press the blue reflector into the butyl pad, lining it up in the exact center of the butyl pad. If possible, slowly drive over the blue reflector with a vehicle, to press it down further into the pad.

Tips & Warnings

• Blue reflectors are placed on the pavement leading up to a fire hydrant to guide fire fighters to the location of the hydrant. Use a path of several blue reflectors to help point out obscured hydrants.
