Introduction: Kids Stocking Hat

Whip up this cute stocking cap in a couple of hours.

Step 1: Ribbing

Supplies

Worsted weight yarn in blue, green and tan

Size 9, 9 inch circular needle

Set of size 9 double pointed needles

This cap is modeled on my 5 year old but would fit a 2 or 3 year old better.

Using blue worsted weight yarn, and a size 9 circular 9 inch needle, cast on 56 stitches (or any multiple of 8 if you want a bigger size). Place a marker and join in the round. Use blue yarn and work in ribbing pattern (knit 2, purl 2) around until piece measures 1 inch from cast on edge.

Step 2: Knit Stripes

Work in stockinette stitch (knit every row) alternating color every 4 rows to form stripes in the following pattern: Blue, green white until you have knit 2 stripes in each color, ending with a blue stripe. Piece should measure about 5 inches from the cast on edge.

Step 3: Decrease

Switch to double pointed needles when necessary.

In green, knit 6, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In white, knit 5, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In blue, knit 4, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In green, knit 4 rows.

In white, knit 3, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In blue, knit 4 rows.

In green, knit 2, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In white, knit 4 rows.

In blue, knit 1, knit 2 together and repeat until end of round. Then knit 3 rows.

In green, knit 4 rows.

In white, knit 3 rows. Then knit 2 together, repeat until end of round. Cut yarn and use a yarn needle to pull up end through remaining stitches on needle. Using a yarn needle, take loose end to inside of hat through tiny opening at the top.

Step 4: Finishing

Weave in all loose yarn ends on inside of cap. Make a pompom and sew to end of hat.
