Introduction: MIT App Inventor Holiday Ornament

Friday is my last day teaching a 8-week coding class to 6th grade girls at Peachtree Charter Middle School. These classes are sponsored by The Loft program at Band of Coders. During the course the students created social engagement apps using MIT App Inventor. As holiday gifts for the other instructors, I made these ornaments.

Step 1: Supplies

  • Lime green felt for Android
  • White felt for eyes
  • Background felt (light grey, charcoal grey, tan)
  • Thread (white, lime, and thread to match background)
  • Embroidery or friendship bracelet thread
  • 2 App Inventor patterns

For the patterns, size the App Inventor logo to 3 3/4" x 3 1/2"

Step 2: Tools

  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Needles (hand sewing needle for eyes, tapestry needle for hanger)
  • Sewing Machine

Step 3: Cut Out Pieces

Cut out 2 4 1/2" X 4 1/2" pieces of background fabric. From one pattern, cut out the Android, pin to lime felt, and cut out.

Step 4: Sew Andriod to Background Felt

Using a tight zigzag stitch, sew Android onto one piece of background felt.

Step 5: Sew Eyes to Andoid

Using pattern as guide, cut out white felt eyes. Sew eyes to Andoid going through background felt by hand.

Note: I sewed the eyes on later in the project, but think it would work better to sew them at this point.

Step 6: Sew Background Pieces Together

Lay the felt with the Andriod on top of the other background piece. Place the second pattern on top. Make sure the Andoid on the pattern is aligned with the one sewn on the felt. On three side, excluding the Android, sew just inside the puzzle piece outline with a small straight stitch. Leave the paper on while sewing. When finish sewing, cut out the puzzle piece and remove paper.

Step 7: Add Hanging String and Stitch Bottom Closed

Cut a 7" piece of friendship bracelet thread, and stitch through back felt using tapestry needle to form hanger. Knot on top.

Alternatively, add hanger between background pieces when sewing them together.

Stitch bottom closed using lime thread and a tight straight sticth.

Step 8: Enjoy Ornaments
