Introduction: Mailable Squid

About: Hi, I'm Esme!

While postcards and letters are marvelous, sometimes what you need to send in the mail is a squid.

Step 1: You'll Need...

  • Coloured felt for the body of the squid
  • Somewhat matching thread (I didn't have any sewing thread, so I used a couple strands from some embroidery floss)
  • White felt for the eyes
  • Dark embroidery floss for the pupils
  • A sewing needle
  • An embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • Squid pattern
  • Stuffing (optional, you could also use some extra felt)
  • Sewing pins (also optional)

Step 2: Pattern

You can use this pattern, or draw your own. Just make sure that it is small enough to fit in an envelope and be MAILABLE.

Step 3: Cut Out the Entire Squid!

First cut out the outline of the pattern, then cut it out of the coloured felt. Set the felt piece aside.

Step 4: Separate the Parts of Your Squid

Cut out the triangle in the middle, the main part of the squid's body.
Cut 2 pieces in this shape out of the coloured felt.

Step 5: Eyeballs

Squids have really big eyes. Giant squids' eyes can be as big as a beach ball.

Cut out an eye from the pattern, and cut two from white felt.

Step 6: Sew the Eyes

Use the dark coloured embroidery floss and an embroidery needle to sew a tiny stitch through one eye and one triangle. I added a french knot on top of that for the pupil, but you could make it visible however you want.

Repeat for the other eye, and tie off your thread.

Step 7: Optional - Stuffing

I had the quilt-batting sort of stuffing, so I separated it into thin layers, cut out two pieces slightly smaller than the triangles, and sandwiched it all together.

If you have extra felt, you could also cut smaller triangles and sandwich them.

If you have a more fluffy sort of stuffing, you could add that when you're almost done sewing each triangle.

Step 8: Sewing

Thread your sewing needle with the matching thread.
Using whipstitch, sew up your squid sandwich! Follow the edge of the triangles.

Look at the notes in the pictures for tips! :)

Step 9: Mail!

After tying off the end of the thread, your squid is READY TO MAIL!

Put it in an envelope and mail it to someone cool.
