Introduction: Make This Adorable Felt Butterfly Pillow Cover

A couple of weeks ago I posted a fun tutorial on “How to make a felt sunflower pillow”. And never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that post would have as huge of a response as it has. Yet, I’m very happy for it…to say the least!!!

So…since it was such a hit, I decided to make another felt pillow, but this time in the form of a butterfly. And this one is just as easy to make and equally adorable. So I made three!

Step 1:

Here’s what you’ll need to make the pillow cover.

Felt in 2 or 3 colors

Butcher or Poster Paper to draw butterfly template

Tape

Scissors

Utility knife

Sewing machine

Fabric glue

All purpose pins

19″ x 19″ Pillow

Step 1: Follow the same steps as the sunflower pillow to make the pillow cover base. Cut one piece of felt 19.5 inches by 19.5 inches to make a square. This will be the pillow front piece. For the back pieces, cut two 19.5 by 11 inch pieces.

Step 2:

Step 2: Determine what size you want your butterfly to be and draw a template of 1/2 of it using butcher or poster paper. I wanted the butterfly to be slightly bigger than the pillow so its wings would hang over the edge of the pillow a little bit. So, I made the butterfly 20″ H x 20″ W. The reason I only drew half of the butterfly is because you’ll get an exact duplicate of the one side if you place the body of the butterfly on the fold of your felt and cut around your template from there.

Step 3:

Step 3: After cutting the outside of your butterfly template, then draw and cut with a utility knife an inside pattern for the detail of the wings. (See cut-out paper template)

Step 4:

Step 4: Cut your outer felt butterfly.

Step 5:

Step 5: Then cut your inner detail pieces in a different color of felt

Step 6:

Step 6: Sew one straight stitch down the body of the butterfly to connect the butterfly to the flat piece of the front of your pillow cover.

Step 7:

Step 7: Place some washable fabric glue on the back side of part the wings. Once you finish gluing, turn wings back over to secure them to the front pillow cover. Repeat with the other wings.

Step 8:

Step 8: Sew the two back pieces of the pillow cover onto the front (right sides together), making sure to pin the butterfly wings so you don’t sew them into the seams.

Step 9:

Step 9: Turn pillow case right side out. At this point you will need to draw another template for the body of the butterfly, then cut and glue it, the antennas and some detail spots to your butterfly wings after they have been sewn and glued to the front pillow cover. You don’t need to make the spots perfect or exactly the same either, each butterfly is different so you should make your pillows different too!
