In this Instructable I show you how to make a muffler (silencer) from an old Fire Extinguisher.

Supplies

For this project I used:

An old Fire Extinguisher
Steel pipe, matching size to the exhaust pipe

Step 2:

Collect your materials.

I already had the exhaust pipe, only the muffler was missing.

I am using an old Fire Extinguisher.

It's at least 20 years old, so not safe anymore to extinguish fires. But perfect for a muffler ;-)

I also had the Old steel pipe in the size of the exhaust laying around.

I Only had to buy the steel wool and some black paint.

Step 3: Prepare the Tube

I cut the tube into 2 pieces, the right size to fit in the "muffler" and long enough for a tip and the part that will connect to the exhaust pipe.

Then drill small holes at the end of each tube. This will help 'scatter' the engine sound into the muffler.

I bend one pipe a bit, so they can overlap a bit and will not hit each other when inside the muffler.

Step 4: Empty the Fire Extinguisher

Carefully empty the Fire Extinguisher. Make sure there is no pressure anymore.

In my case I was able to unscrew the head just by hand.

They say the powder is not bad for your health, except it can give you diarrhea when inhaling too much ;-)

But still, better use some protection!

Step 5: Drill Holes

Drill out the hole until you got the size of your exhaust pipe.

Also drill another hole on the back, for the second pipe.

Step 6: Insert Steel Wool

Insert steel wool, or an other muffling material.

Don't stuff it too much, so the gasses can still flow out..

Step 7:

Insert the 2 prepared pipes and weld them to the old fire extinguisher.

Here I also weld the exhaust pipe to my new creation. If you want to make a removable muffler you have to make some sort of clamps to attach it to the exhaust pipe. But in my case just a 'one piece' exhaust is ding fine.
