Introduction: My Prop Eyes
This is a quick tutorial on how i make my eyes, I usually make 10 at a time sometimes more depending on my needs. They are pretty quick accept for the drying time.
Step 1: Step 1 : Tools You Will Need
- White spray paint
- 1 inch wooden balls (1 inch wooden balls are the closest to the size of a human eye NOT ping pong balls.)
- Mod podge Gloss Lustre
- Hot glue gun
- Red paint
- Small drill
- drill bit to match size of skewers
- Bamboo skewers
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
- Red yarn
- Ravenmyst Eye template or one of your choosing.
Step 2: Step 2 : Drill Out the Balls
Take your drill bit drill a shallow hole just large enough for the end of the skewer and add some glue from the glue gun.
Step 3: Step 3 : Painting
Paint all your Wooden balls , Make sure you do not see wood showing through. Once these are dry add a layer or "Coating" of Modge podge to the entire ball to seal in the color.
Step 4: Step 4 : Picking Out Your Iris/pupil
Time to pick out your Iris/Pupil download and print out an Eye Template like the one here and choose what colors you need and cut them out.
Step 5: Step 5 : Cutting Out Your Iris/Pupil
Take your scissors and working carefully cut out all your
Iris/Pupil , if there is a little white showing it will not hurt anything.
Step 6: Step 6 : Iris/Pupil Cut
Notice in the photo i have put 4 black lines, Take your scissors and cut where those lines would be , Do not cut into the center or pupil. This will help to conform to the shape.
Step 7: Step 7 : Attaching Iris/Pupil Part 1
Part 1 : Attaching Iris/Pupil part 1 Add some glue to the top
Step 8: Step 8 : Attaching Iris/Pupil Part 2
Part 2 : Using a brush or your finger if you prefer spread it around the area.
Step 9: Step 9 : Attaching Iris/Pupil Part 3
Add your Iris/Pupil once it is stuck where you want it add a drop of Mod Podge and
spread it over the top sealing it to the ball.
Step 10: Step 10 : Painting
Now that we are dry, shake your red paint and get your brush ready .
Just get a little on your brush and starting from the back end where you drilled the hole , Brush to the mid line of your eye. Now do not have your brush dripping with paint you want it a little more than if you were dry brushing.
Step 11: Step 11 : Check Your Progress
You want the red paint to look featherd and look like little fading lines at the mid point. Hold the ball like shown in the photo on the right side you should just barely see some lines on the sides thats what it should look like.
Step 12: Step 12 : Adding Veins
Now its time to add the veins .
Using your red yarn cut a small size piece smaller than the width of your ball.
Seperate it into really tiny fibers, Add some glue to Mod podge to your ball .
Take some of the fibers place them below the midline of the ball just behind the red.
While holding the fibers to the ball use your brush with a little mod podge on it to stick the threads to the ball feathering towards the iris/pupil DO NOT go to close to the Iris/pupil.
Continue doing this all the way around , take your time add small pieces at a time until you get the look you want.
Step 13: Step 13 : Time to Finish It Up
Now that you have added all your veins your going to let it dry.
I like to let mine go for an hour but you can choose the time you prefer.
Step 14: Step 14: Almost Done
Here are your Eyes , Let them all dry
Now add 2 , 3 , 4 layers or however many coats you want to seal it up and hold that gloss.
