Introduction: Nyan Cat Rocket

K9 has been bothering me for someone to hang out with while I'm in class, but my budget for this month is on the brink
of  falling into the Red so I needed to come up with a buddy for k9 on the cheap hence this instrubtible was born. I started thinking about what should I make when I heard it comming from my room mates room "it" being the Nyan Cat theme. It clicked,  I'm going to make a Nyan Cat for k9, I know cats and dog aren't typically the best of friends but who can so no to a pop tart cat. My challge this time is nyan cat loves to fly so instead of being ground based she needed to be air borne, with that in mind I turned to rockets I mean after all her natural habitat is space so it was a no brainier.

Step 1: Lanchpad- (Not the Duck :)

*WARNING , THIS COMPRESSED AIR AND PVC BUILD CAN BE DANGEROUS CHECK TO SEE HOW MUCH PSI YOUR PIPE CAN TAKE AND DON'T GET ANYWHERE NEAR THAT NUMBER BECAUSE IF THE PIPE BREAKS APART AND FLIES EVERYWHERE IT COULD CUT YOU LIKE A KNIFE *

Rockets with any type of combustibles would be a no-no in the dorm so I went with the more dorm friendly compressed air. I also
decided to make this at home that way I could test it out in the field and if all went well Nyan cat woud come back with me.

Materials needed for Lanchpad:

1/2 inch pvc pipe 17'should be plenty with some left over.

4 bolts

1 inch coupling

T pvc fitting

90 degree bend fitting

pvc cap

O-Ring

pvc cement

soda bottle

wire firing pin

Black and Decker workmate

air compressor

quick cupling for the air compressor going into the pipe and connceting to the air hose

(In my case Wasp spray :( During testing got stung 11 times by yellow jackets in the ground)

As you can see from the photos the pvc Pipe was cut into sections and made a "T" shape using the two fittings and pvc cement mentioned above cap one end and add the quick cupling for the air compresser on the other end. Put a empty soda bottle on the pipe that is up on the 90 degree angle and mark it because your going to need to make a grove where you can slip the o-ring around. Next up, drill two holes in the 1 inch coupling where the wire firing pin and hold the top lip of the bottle. once that is done drill out four holes on the bottom of the same coupling for the bolts.  If your lost take a look at the pictures for additional help. Attach a rope or string to the firing pin.

The workmate will be used to stabilize the launchpad and add weight so it wont tip over.

Step 2: Nyan Cat

Your going to need light weight material for the body , I used a very light weight cardboard. After printing out the template which you can get here. Now your cat can be any size you want just size the printing to the lenght and width you want. I used the resin
technique that they use on making halo coustumes only I didn't add  any fiber glass.

After you get your cat cut out and put  each separate part together and resin applied, dried and sanded then you can glue it all together
Once that is done its time to sand it and apply the cat look.

*when putting together the body measure your soda bottle width that way Nyan will go around the bottle... Think kind of like a sock.*

Step 3: 3...2...1....Nyan

Add streamers to Nyan for the rainbow trail, Next secure the bottle to the launch tube and put in firing pin. Now slip on Nyan over the bottle and turn on your air compressor to a safe PSI 50-85 will launch it a pretty good distance. Once your  rocket is "Hot" give the count down step back and pull the string attached to the firing pin.  Enjoy Nyan blasting off into space with rainbow trail.

* The Black and Decker workmate is acting as a weight that way the rocket doesn't fall over and shoot off towards you.*
