The name Phone Fob is a combination of the phrases Cell Phone Case and Key Fob.

OBJECTIVE:
I was motivated to make this Phone Fob because my old cell phone case clip had broken and I had no way of clipping my cell phone onto the outside of my handbag. I was tired of missing calls because my cell phone was trapped inside my handbag. I also wanted my cell phone near my keys which also ended up at the bottom of my handbag.

I wanted the case to be versatile. It is innovative because of its versatility. It straps onto the outside of my handbag with two magnetic closures. It can also be attached to my belt with the same closures. It can easily be detached from my purse so I can set the case on my desk while I am at work. It can also be attached to my coordinating fabric key fob when I want to carry the cell phone on my wrist. It has a key ring and hook closure in just case I do not want to carry the key fob.

Step 1: MATERIALS AND TOOLS:

Step 2: MEASURING & CUTTING

MEASURING:
It is important to measure the cell phone at this step. Measure the length and the width. Add one and one-half inch (1.5 in.) to the length and two inches (2.0 in.) to the width. For example, actual phone measures 4.0 in. L x 2.25 in. W. The result would be 5.5 in. L x 4.25 in. W.

CUTTING:
TIP: To prevent cutting mistakes, always measure at least twice before cutting fabric.

Step 3: IRONING & SEWING/ASSEMBLING INFO.

Ironing:
TIP: Follow the interfacing manufacturers instructions for iron heat/steam settings before starting this step.

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the main and contrasting fabric for each of the following:

Handbag/belt strap
Key ring strap
Cell phone enclosure
Case strap
Key fob

Sewing/Assembling:
TIP: Stitch all seams one-half inch (.50 in.) from edge of fabric. Trim all edges to one-fourth inch (.25 in.) after stitching. Reinforce all corners (I triple stitch them).

NOTE: It is important that these instructions be followed in the order presented. Do not skip any steps or it will be very difficult to fix.

Step 4: CELL PHONE CASE Handbag/Belt Strap

Handbag/Belt Strap:
With right sides together, stitch one half inch (.50 in.) from the edge of left side, right side and bottom. Only stitch one inch (1.0 in.) on each side of the top leaving the center unstitched. Reinforce the stitches at the corners.
Trim the edge to one-fourth inch (.25 in.). Crop all four corners at an angle.

Turn handbag/belt strap right side out and press with iron. Be sure to tuck the un-sewn section inside when pressing.

From the top opening of the handbag/belt strap, install the female ends of two (2) magnetic closures on the main fabric and the male ends of the two (2) magnetic closures on the contrasting fabric. To line up the closures, use the washers as templates and measure three-fourths of an inch (.75 in.) from the edge to the center of the circle in the washer. Mark the fabric with a pencil/chalk and cut slits long enough for each closure prong. Insert the closure into the fabric/interfacing layer, add the washer and bend the prongs out. Set aside.

Step 5: CELL PHONE CASE Key Ring Strap

Key Ring Strap:
With fabric side up, fold the key ring strap in half and press then unfold. With interfacing side up, fold each half and press with iron. The width of the finished strap will measure one-half inch (.50 in.)

Stitch down the open side of the strap along the edge. Fold the finished strap in half and insert into the center of the handbag/belt strap leaving about one-half inch (.50 in.) exposed. The loop that is formed will be for inserting the key ring later in a Step 7.

Stitch the folded strap in place. Top stitch entire top of the handbag/belt strap closed. Set aside.

Step 6: CELL PHONE CASE Enclosure

Cell Phone Enclosure:

Using one of the cell phone enclosure pieces, center the completed handbag/belt strap.

Stitch the handbag/belt strap two inches (2 in.) from the left edge, two inches (2 in.) from the right edge and right along the bottom edge. Note the chalk lines in the photo. Stitch on the chalk lines and the bottom between the chalk lines ONLY.

This piece will become the backside of the cell phone enclosure

Step 7: CELL PHONE CASE Strap

Case Strap:
With fabric side up, fold the case strap in half and press, then unfold. With interfacing side up, fold each half and press with iron.

TIP: To reinforce the fabric under the magnetic closure, add a round piece of fusible hem tape such as Heat â€˜n Bond iron on adhesive.
WARNING: When stitching fabric after a magnetic closure has been installed, it is important to note where the edges of the closure are, otherwise damage to the machine/needle could occur.

Fold the edge of the fabric in one-half inch (.50 in.) so that the strap has no raw edge.

Install the male end of the remaining magnetic closures on the outside of the strap. The closure should be three-fourths of an inch (.75 in.) from the folded edge. Mark the fabric with a pencil and cut slits long enough for each closure prong.

Insert the closure into the fabric/interfacing layer, add the washer and bend the prongs out.
TIP: A zipper foot is useful at this point.

Stitch the open side of the strap along the edge being careful that the needle does not hit the metal closure.

Stitch the short bottom edge again being careful that the needle does not hit the metal closure. This strap will be needed in next step.

Step 8: CELL PHONE CASE Lining With Quilted Batting

Lining With Quilted Batting:
NOTE: The case strap assembled in the last step needs to be stitched (centered) into the seam of the fabric and lining of the back of the cell phone enclosure.

With right sides of cell phone enclosure assembled in step #6 and one piece of the quilted batting together, stitch one half inch (.50 in.) from the top edge making sure to insert and center the case strap into the seam. This will become the back of the cell phone enclosure. The magnetic closure on the case strap needs to face up in order to attach to the front of the case.

With the remaining cell phone enclosure and quilted batting, put right sides together, stitch one half inch (.50 in.) from the top edge. This will become the front of the cell phone enclosure.

TIP: It is necessary to leave the quilted lining open at the bottom so that you can turn the case right side out.
Lay the case out as shown in the photo.

With right sides of fabric together, stitch the left side, right side and bottom one half inch (.50 in.) from the edge. This will be a bit bulky because the handbag/belt strap will be inside.

Trim the edge to one-fourth inch (.25 in.). Crop the bottom corners at an angle.

Step 9: CELL PHONE CASE Final Assembly

Final Assembly of Phone Case:

Turn the case right side out through the opening in the lining. It will be difficult to squeeze through but be assured, it will work, just take your time. It is helpful to pull one corner at a time and pull the magnetic closures apart.

Press with a steam iron to remove any wrinkles from being pulled through the lining.

Insert the cell phone into the case to determine where the female end of the remaining magnetic closures should be placed.

On the outside of the case, mark the fabric with a pencil where the female closure should be added. Remove the cell phone.

Using the seam ripper, cut slits long enough for each closure prong. Insert the closure into the fabric/interfacing layer, add the washer and bend the prongs out.

Stitch the lining closed along the bottom edge.

Step 10: CELL PHONE CASE Attach Hardware

Attach Hardware:

Attach the split key ring and hook to the key ring strap on the cell phone case.

Step 11: KEY FOB

Key Fob:
With fabric side up, fold the key fob strap in half and press, then unfold. With fusible side up, fold each half and press with iron.

Lay the quilted batting in the center of the strap and fold the fob fabric in half along its length.

The finished key fob will measure one and one-quarter inches (1.25 in.) W by 12 inches L. Stitch along both left and right edges. NOTE: The key fob hardware is 1.25 in. wide.

TIP: Use a potholder to protect the key fob metal from scratches when crimping it closed.

Fold the fob in half and stitch closed at the top. This will make attaching the hardware easier.

Attach the key fob hardware by folding a potholder over the metal and crimping closed with pliers.

Attach a split key ring.
