Introduction: Plate Weight Rack

I don't have a TON of weight yet, but i do have enough to make it messy. So i thought it was time i did something quick to get my weights off the ground. I thought of building some racks on the floor but this seemed to use less space.

Supplies:

  • 2x4s i think like 30 feet, i had a bunch of scraps
  • 1 1/4" dowel - 4 feet
  • Zip Ties
  • Paint (optional)

Tools:

  • Drill and normal bits
  • 1 1/4" hole drill bit
  • Circular Saw or Miter Saw
  • Wood Glue
  • Measuring Tape
  • 3" Deck Screws
  • 2" Screws

Step 1: Cut Your Wood

I cut and assembled the stands one side at a time. So that is how i will explain everything. Just know i doubled it so i could have one stand on each side of the bench.

Cut two 3 foot pieces. Take one of the pieces and cut a 3 1/2" piece off the end(it will be used as the middle piece on the top).

Cut one 7" piece for the middle piece on the bottom.

One 16" piece for the bottom cross stand

Two 12" pieces for the front stand

Step 2: Drill Your Dowel Holes

I laid out my 45lbs and 25lbs plates on the stand to see where my holes should go.

DISCLAIMER!!!! I messed this up!! The top hole was way too high and i actually hit it with the bar when i bench sometimes :( I need to move it down further and will probably not have room to put my 45s on the rack. But oh well.

I drilled a small pilot hole where i wanted the dowels and then I used a 1 1/4" drill bit to make the holes. I was careful to only go about half way through the bottom 2x4 (.75 is half).

Then i inserted the dowel into the stand and marked and measured it so there would be 6" sticking out.

Step 3: Cut the Dowels to Length

I used a miter saw so that i could secure the dowels during the cut.

Step 4: Assemble the Stand

I used 3" deck screws to secure everything together. I drilled pilot holes so that nothing split on me.

I used 1 1/2" screws and wood glue to secure the dowels in place.

Step 5: Final Thoughts

After assembling everything, i used some zipties to secure each stand to the bench press. Then all that was left was to put on all the plates!

As noted earlier, i should have put the top dowels lower because they get in the way of the bar during a bench. This is just my short term solution, eventually Ill have to build something larger on the wall.

I hope you enjoyed. Here are some of my inspirations:
