Introduction: Poisoned Candied Apples

Candied apples are already a fantastic holiday treat. But why not up the spook factor and have some fun by turning them into the Evil Queen's famous poisoned apples.

Step 1: Supplies

  • Apples - I went for a red variety, just for the look of it, though the tartness of green apples works great against the candy and chocolate
  • Sticks - to put in the apples
  • Sugar
  • Cream of tartar
  • Red food coloring
  • Green dipping chocolate/candy or white chocolate dyed green
  • Candy thermometer

Step 2: Candy the Apples

Be sure to prep the apples by washing them and putting the sticks in.

You can candy the apples in whatever way you prefer, but this is how I did it.

For the candy, the ingredients are:

  • 2 Cups sugar
  • 1 Cup water
  • 1/4 tsp Cream of tartar
  • Red food coloring

Put the ingredients in a saucepan and put it on the stove on high. Let it boil until the temperature of the candy reaches about 300 degrees F. Once it reaches that temperature, remove the pan from heat and stir in the food coloring. Then dip in the apples and let them cool on a lightly greased cookie sheet. I went for a more textured look.

Step 3: Start Adding Chocolate

Melt down the chocolate and and pipe it onto the apple to form two eyes and the nose holes. Then go around the apple adding the drips. You can add a few drops of vegetable oil to the melted chocolate to help smooth it out if it starts setting too much as you work with it.

Step 4: Cover the Rest of the Apple

Add chocolate over the rest of the apple and smooth it over with a spoon or rubber scraper. You can also add additional drips for texture. And that's it. Pretty simple, overall, but they look really spooky and they taste great. Hope you enjoy them!
