Introduction: Pool Cleaner Tire Life Extention

My pool cleaner is a Pentair Kreepy Krauly Dominator Lite. Like all similar cleaners the tires need to be replaced when they wear out. This can be expensive - with this one the tires cost about 15% of the price of a new cleaner.

I was cleaning the cleaner (?!) and noticed that the tires wear out more on the outer edge than anywhere else. This is possibly a result of combination of the design of the cleaner and the pool not being flat.

There are other pool cleaners that work more or less the same and use a similar mechanism for their tires. This idea may also work for pool cleaners that use rubber tracks.

Supplies

No tools or equipment needed.

Step 1: Flip Tires

There is only one step, and will take a few minutes:

  1. Take the tires off the rims and replace them backwards (flip them), so that the worn outer edge is on the inside, and the inner edge with more tread is on the outside.

The most important part would be to check the wear on the tires from time to time. Mine had been running for more than year to get the wear as in the photos. The idea would be to get the tires to end up with the same wear on both edges by the time they need to be replaced.

This simple procedure should extend the life of the tires. I don't know how much yet. Even a month more would be worth the hard work (!) of flipping the tires.
