Introduction: Quick, Elegant and Personalized Gift Card Holder

This was inspired by an advertising card that came in the mail.  We thought it gives a personalized touch to simple gifts, such as  gift cards, homemade CDs, etc.

Materials & Tools:
  • Double side paper (a heavier stock helps)
  • Razor Blade or X-acto knife
  • Raffia or Ribbon
  • DVD or other object with different diameter sizes to use as a guide

Step 1: Measure & Fold

Use the round object to measure the center area. The example is the size of a DVD.  You can also make them in other sizes using round objects with smaller or larger diameters.

Start with a square piece of paper that is 2 times the width of the longest side of your gift. (in this case a DVD)

Place the DVD in the center of the paper sheet.

Fold each side of the paper over the DVD in a straight line, as shown in the pictures.

Step 2: Make Closing Flaps

At this point the paper sheet has been divided in 9 squares.

To make the closing flaps, center the DVD on one of the outside edges of the center square (see image).
Look through the hole of the DVD and make sure the folding line is right in the middle of the DVD.

Using the DVD as a guide, cut a half circle with your razor blade. (see image)
You can also mark with a pencil around the DVD and cut with scissors later, whatever feels more comfortable for you.

Repeat this step with the other 3 sides of the center square, as shown in the pictures.

Choose which side of the paper you would like to be the exterior of the envelope.  We flipped the paper over so the green side is in the outside and the blue in the inside.

Step 3: Fold Flaps

You should have a center square with half circles on each side.

Fold each half circle one by one into the square, overlapping onto each other.

Each flap should have a corner uncovered and the other corner covered by another flap.

Step 4: Add a Bow for a Gift

Cut a 1/2" slot on 2 opposite flaps. Be aware to not make them to close to the edge because the paper can rip.

Thread the ribbon through the slots.

Place your DVD, gift card or note in the center of the square and fold the flaps over, closing the envelope.

Pull the ribbon tight and tie a simple bow.
Note:  These will stay closed without a bow... but its a nice touch.
