Rebuilding an Atomizer for Your Vaporizor

This Instructable is for anyone who wants to learn more about the inner workings of their mechanical vaporizer and how to assemble your rebuildable atomizer for the first time. This knowledge will allow you to personalize your pen to give you the best vaping experience possible in under ten minutes of your time. There is no level of experience needed to complete this task. All you need are your hands, these instructions, and an optimistic attitude!

Overview

Vaporizers have become popular in today’s society. They are used for recreational purposes as well as an outlet to quit smoking traditional cigarettes. There are many types of vaporizers, some being simple to use and others requiring more experience. One of the more common types is called the mechanical or mech mod. These types require users to construct their own coils for burning the various kinds of e-juice.

What You Will Need

1. Mechanical mod with atomizer ($25-$250)

2. Kanthal wire ($5 and under)

3. 1/8” drill bit or screw driver

4. Small screw driver

5. Ohm reader ($10-$25)

6. Wicking material ($5-$10)

Tip: Many urban and suburban areas have vaporizer and tobacco stores that have all of these items. However, the majority of them are also available at most hardware stores such as Home Depot. In general, these items will be very easy to find and at a relatively low price. In addition, some of these items will be reusable for the next time you rebuild your atomizer.

Safety

E-juice that contains nicotine can be dangerous if ingested. Nicotine is also known to be very addictive with chronic use. Children under the age of 18 should not use E-Cigs just as they should not smoke regular cigarettes. Handle with caution.

Using improper batteries with certain coils can be dangerous. Therefore we advise you take note of your mods specifications. Also, the coils are meant to reach very high temperatures. Please avoid touching the coils when activating the vaporizer to avoid serious burning.

Step 1: Measure Out 6 - 8 Inches of Kanthal Wire

You can then use household scissors or snips to cut the wire.

Step 2: Create the Coil

Tightly wrap the kanthal wire 6-8 times around the smooth part of the drill bit, leaving a ½ inch of wire at each end. Make sure each wrap is as close as possible to the previous one.

Note: When finished wrapping, both ends (or feeds) should face the same direction. To some, this is the most difficult step and it may take one or two tries to complete.

Step 3: Loosen the Screws on One of the Outer and the Inner Posts on Top of Your Atomizer.

Step 4: Install the Coil

Carefully slide one end of your coil into the outer (negative) posthole, and the other into the inner (positive) posthole. Using the drill bit or the small screw driver you wrapped the coil around may make it easier to slide the kanthal wire through the post holes.

Make sure the coil is on the side next to the atomizer's air hole. Once both ends are through the post holes, tighten the post’s screws.

Using snips or scissors, clip any extra kanthal on the opposite site of your coil as close to the posts as possible.

Tip: To make this task even easier, purchase a mech mod with relatively large post holes. This way you will be able to slide the coil ends through quicker.

Step 5: Position the Coil in the Atomizer

Adjust the coil so it does not touch any part of the atomizer. The only part that should be touching is the kanthal wire running through the posts.

Step 6: Check the Resistance of the Coil

Screw the atomizer onto your ohm reader and make sure the coil is safe to use with your mech mod.

Note: You should always check the resistance of your coil and calculate the amps the coil will pull from your battery. You can use an ohm calculator to plug in either the watts or volts from your battery and the resistance reading from your coil. If these safety rules are not followed your battery or device can fail resulting in injury or property damage from fire or explosion.

Step 7: Reconnect the Atomizer to Your Mech. Mod.

Before testing, double check that no parts of the coil are touching the atomizer(excluding where it connects with the posts). If none are, test the coil by pressing the button on your mod.

Note: A good coil will turn red or blueish white depending on the kanthal and resistance produced by the coil. Your coil should also heat up from the middle -- if it doesn't, use your tweezers to crimp the ends together.

Step 8: Wicking Material

Take a small amount of your desired wicking material (in this case cotton), and feed it through the coil. Next, you want to snip the end of the wick near the edge of your atomizer. Finally, tuck the remaining wick into your drip-well under your coil on both ends.

Note: To prevent from burns and other injury, make sure the coil is not hot after testing.

Step 9: Reassemble Your E-Cig

Apply a few drops of your desired juice onto the coil and wicking material.

Screw or place the atomizer cap over the atomizer, making sure the air holes on the cap and atomizer are lined up.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Newly Built Atomizer

Once everything has been assembled correctly you may begin to enjoy your newly built atomizer! Your E-cig should immediately start producing large clouds of flavored vapor once you activate the vaporizer.
