Introduction: Removing Damaged PTO Tube

This works for PTO or constant velocity joint tube replacement. The profile of the tube only changes the shape of the washer. This may not work with splined style slip joints.

Supplies

One broken PTO Shaft or CV shaft tube, 1 replacement inner tube and outer tube, 1 Vise, 1 flat faced 3 pound hammer, grinder with cut off wheel and grinding wheel, hacksaw and file if grinder and grinding wheels are not available , 1 foot of 3/4 inch all thread rod (larger the better if it fits.), 4 thick washers, 4 nuts (2 can be made to work), Vise Grip Pliers, wrench to fit the nuts, new roll pin or same size bolt with lock nut,

Step 1: Preparing Pulling Tool & Yoke.

Shape 1 large washer to match the outside profile of the tube. Remove burs from all thread. If using 4 nuts create a jam nut on one end by installing 2 nuts flush tightly jam the two nuts agenst each other. Run the 3rd nut & washer up the all thread rod past halfway. Install the socket with the ratchet side next to the washer. Lay the all thread and socket assembly to the side. Remove the rool pin by inserting a rool pin punch and drive thepin out with the hammer. (Never use a center punch for this operation life sucks if you do). Cut the damaged tube. 1/4 inch (6mm) above the yoke.

Step 2: Removing the Tube

While holding the jamed nuts or Vice Grips tighten the middle nut toward the socket until it pulls out the yoke. If the socket is too short it may bottom out you may need a short length of pipe between the yoke and socket.

Step 3: Install Puller.

Slip the socket over the 1/4inch stub and the all thread rod through the tube and yoke. Slip the profiled washer on the rod inside the yoke. Thread the last nut flush to the rod end. Snugg the middle nut toward the washer and socket. Keeping the profiled washer aligned with the old tube.

Step 4: Insert Replacement Tube.

Remove burs from the outside of the new tube. Grease the end of the tube. Align the tube & tap the tube in the yoke. When it is at the correct location drill the rool pin hole from both sides. Drive the rool pin in insert a wire through the rool pin. Twist the wire around as a security measure. If using a bolt insert it through the rool pin hole tighten the lock nut on trim the bolt flush with the back of the nut. (Don't over heat the bolt & nut with the grinder's blade if using a nylock "nylon style lock nut"). Cut the tube to length & reinstall the safety shield. Repeat the process to the other side ( make a new profiled washer).
