Introduction: Replace Silhouette Cameo Rubber Rings the Simple and Fast Way

like many others have experienced, after a few years the black rubber o-rings started to degrade to the point where they were warped and left black streaks whenever it made contact with the media.

As posted on reddit you can get replacement rings from Amazon. But to install them means you need to take apart the machine as found on a video on Youtube. If you are ready to do that I don't stop you and you might get a better result.

This tutorial shows you how to use Sugru by Tesa (or any other silicon that comes as silicon rubber) in just 10 minutes (and 24h waiting time)

Supplies

  • Aluminum foil
  • Kitchen knife
  • Sugru by Tesa (or other silicon rubber as dough)

Step 1: Preparation

Remove the old rings (it's a mess). I used paper towels and at the end some kitchen oil to remove the stains.

Connect the machine to power.

Tear a small piece of thin aluminium foil (as it is non sticky and very thin)

Open your Sugru

Step 2: Load the Stuff Into the Machine

Use the "Load Media" function to load the aluminum foil into the cutter. I started with the roller in the up position.

Add a thin "sausage" of Sugru on the aluminum foil.

Slowly transport the Sugru with the arrow keys under the roller.

Attention: don't press the button too long, otherwise the transport will speed up - you don't want that.

Slowly move it back and forward and it will be flattened.

Step 3: Wrap Around

Then move the roller to the "down" position. It will most probably start to wrap around the axis.

Cut off any excess material.

Keep on rolling. Remember not to press the button too long.

If there is a gap where the ends connect put on some material that you did cut off and roll again.

Put the roller in the up position.

Remove the foil by unloading the media.

Wait for at least 24 hours.

Step 4: Finishes

Considerations: I have no clue how long and how good it works with the media you are using. I cut only PVC foil and I did post it right after repairing my machine so I don't forget how I have done it.

I guess you could add more silicon rollers even in places where no rubbering ring was before. But I haven't tested it.

I will think later if adding a layer of silicon could help the plastic rollers too. But I will first use my new "rubber rings" to test them properly.
