Introduction: Repurposed Memory Box

Memory boxes help us to remember special moments in time & to create an art piece with a item.

In this Instructable we are going to show you how to create a memory box out of a object.

Memory boxes are as simple as gluing some sentimental items to an item as your base.

Memory assemblage boxes help us to remember special moments in time of people & places.

Step 1: Picking Your Items.

My mother and I have collected a variety of items that have some special memories.

For the base of my memory box I have chosen my Grandfather's old movie camera.

Any item can be used such as a book,frame,cigar,box,etc.....

My grandfather was in the Army Air corps so we used some photos, ticket stubs, small documents that can be inserted into an envelope.

some supplies that you might need.

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Hot glue
  • Epoxy glue
  • Matt gel
  • Cardboard
  • Paint brushes
  • Acrylic paint
  • Stamp pad w/ ink

Step 2: Assembling the Base Part1.

We opened the back of the camera & used it as a main base of our items.

(you can use a book and cut out a niche for the same effect)

We cut a photograph to fit in the top section and we took a handwritten note for the bottom section (see second picture) and glued them in place with glue of choice and coated with mat gel.

Step 3: Step 3 Painting

In this step we painted the outside of the camera with acrylic paint to give depth and visual interest.

We aged the envelope using distressed ink by rubbing it on the edges and glued a ticket stub to the envelope. Then attached the envelope to the door of the camera (see picture in step 4).

Step 4:

Inside the tin we took some paperwork that had his name on it and glued it inside the tin.

We used a glass marble to magnify his name on the paper. (to glue clear marbles or glass use a small dot of glue on the edge of the object)

We used epoxy glue to attach the bottle cap, name tag, rank insignia and a wooden knob on the bottom.

We hot glued the envelope to the back of the camera door and attached other items.

Step 5: Final Thoughts : Some Ideas for Embellishment and Items

To create arrays of dots - a metallic ribbon is used. You use a brush or sponge pressed on a ink pad & dabbed over the ribbon that is held over an area.

Paint can be used but be sure to dip your brush on a paper towel so that is it very dry before used. (this prevents running)

other ideas include

  • Stencils
  • Jewelry
  • Rhinestones
  • Lace
  • Letters and words cut out of a book or dictionary or other medium

Using dated objects on your memory box, will help to give people an idea of that period in time of a loved one or place.
