I am a fan of Game of Thrones, the costumes, the architecture and jewelry are pieces of art. When I saw Sansa Stark moth ring I felt in love with it, but a ring of that size in silver or any other metal must be really heavy and finger killing if the wings get tangle in your clothes or what not... So I decided to create one with oven-bake clay and wire to make it lightweight and a bit flexible. ;)

It is not a perfect replica, it is inspired by the Sansa Moth ring...

Step 1: Materials & Tools

Jewelry wire
Oven-bake Clay* (Pardo Art Clay or Sculpey)
Silver & graphite metallic paint
Mod Podge dimensional magic**
Pliers
Paint brush

*don't use the already colored clay like Fimo, paint doesn't stick on it and makes a mess...

**you can use acrylic semi-gloss/gloss varnish as well but it will need 3 to 4 layers...

Step 2: Wire Structure

Using your pliers, shape and twist the wire to make the body of the moth, then cut and shape additional wires to make the wings structure and antennas. I had the Sansa moth ring picture on my computer screen as reference.

You might need some working gloves to do this if you are goof as me... Thank you bandaid... ;D

Step 3: Clay Shaping

Get your oven-bake clay worked out well in your hands to make it easier to use, begin with the body of the moth and then the wings wrapping the wires. I added movement/waves on the wings to make them look more realistic, then with your finger tips or the back of your paint brush, soflty carves the clay to give it a sort of veins pattern. I have left the moth's head smooth and added a fur like pattern on its body by adding little strokes with my nails on the clay.

Bake the clay on an aluminium sheet in your oven. Follow your clay instructions regarding the time and temperature.

Step 4: Painting

Wait for the clay to be dry and cold to begin the painting. Add 2 or 3 layers of silver painting all over the moth, wait for the layers to dry well. Mix a bit of graphite metallic paint to your silver paint and add strokes on the body and wings to create shadows and relief...

You can glue a premade blank ring or create your own with the wire and clay like I did, it is not very well designed but it's sturdy enough for not loosing the ring and flexible enough for the safety of my fingers !

When you are satisfied with the result, add a layer of Mod Podge or acrylic varnish to give it a shiny look and make it resistant enough to wear it everyday... ;)
