Introduction: Setting Up a Laptop to a Projector

Paper handouts are a thing of the past! Meetings have now incorporated the use of visual presentations to help engage employees and to keep their attention throughout the entire presentation. By using a projector during a meeting, less time is wasted on preparing handouts. The use of a projector will also help to decrease the cost of materials used for printing such as, paper, ink, and binding materials.

You will need the following items before you begin:

1. A projector

2. A projector remote

3. A projection screen

4. A laptop

5. A laptop power cord

6. A network cable

7. A power strip (if not close to an outlet)

By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to successfully hook up your laptop to a projector. This process The will reduce the time and energy needed to create hand outs.

Step 1: Lower Your Projector Screen

Lower your projection screen by either pushing a button or manually pulling on a cord. A projection screen can come in many different shapes and sizes. For this demonstration, my facility purchased an automatic screen that lowers from the ceiling by pushing a button. If a screen is not available, your images can be displayed on a neutral wall. However, if you choose to display on a wall instead of a screen, you may notice the image is not as clear.

Step 2: Plug in Your Power Strip

Begin by plugging in your power strip cord into an outlet. Depending on where your outlets are in your meeting area, a power strip may be necessary. By using a power strip, not only will it give you more ability to station your equipment throughout the room, but it will give you the ability to plug in additional devices needed for your presentation, such as an additional computer or speakers.

Step 3: Attaching Your Computer Power Cord

It is very important to have your computer fully charged before beginning a presentation. To ensure that you will never run out of battery, plug your computer's power cord to the power strip. You will notice that the power cord on this computer attaches to the back of the computer.

Step 4: Logging Into Your Computer

Once your computer has power you must turn it on. Once the start up menu has ran its programming, you will be required to log in with your username and password. If you do not know your credentials, your Information Technology Department will be able to help you. If you are using your personal computer, contact the manufacturer of your computer for additional help.

Step 5: Attach the Network Cord

Your network cord should be attached to the back of your computer. This outlet may be on either side of your computer as well, depending on the manufacturer. In this demonstration, a Dell computer was used. This network cord is connected from your computer to your projector. If this cord is not properly connected, your images will not be displayed on your projection screen.

Step 6: Turn on Your Projector

The projector I used was attached to the ceiling. To turn this unit on, I simply used the projector's remote and pressed the "ON" button. If your projector is not attached to a location out of your reach, you can press the "ON" button directly on the projector itself. It may take anywhere between 1-3 minutes for your projector to display an image on the screen, so be patient.

Step 7: The Image Is Displayed on the Screen

If you have followed each step, your image on your computer screen should be the same as is on your projection screen.

Step 8: Putting It All Together

In this video, I demonstrate step-by-step instructions on how to hook up your laptop to a projector.

Thank you for taking time to watch my Instructable. I hope by following these steps it will reduce time and money spent on preparing handouts for your meetings.
